Crash with 3 injured teenagers under investigation - Law Offices of ...

Parents in Phoenix have no doubt heard that the first years after a teenager gets his or her driver's license, are among the most dangerous in terms of accidents. Some states have laws prohibiting more than one passenger in the car during the first year of driving. Arizona is one of the states with a so-called graduated driver's license. In addition, many parents have rules as well such as no cellphone use, no texting, no eating or no music.

Even with these provisions in place, accidents can happen when a teenager is at the wheel. Recently, three minors were involved in a single car accident in Anthem near the intersection of Anthem Way and Freedom Way. Witnesses say the car appeared to be traveling at more than the 35 mile per hour posted speed limit. The car left the road and traveled about 50 yards in the median before coming to a stop.

The driver was taken to Children's Hospital with injuries that were described as life-threatening. There were two minors riding as passengers who were also injured and taken to Children's Hospital. The accident took place around 9:00 in the evening.

It does not appear that the teenage driver was breaking any of the graduated driver's license rules. Those rules are:

  • No driving between midnight and 5:00 a.m. unless a parent or legal guardian is in the front seat or in case of certain types of events.
  • No driving on a public highway with more than one passenger under the age of 18, unless the passenger is a sibling or a parent or legal guardian with a valid driver's license is in the front seat.

However, if the teenage driver was speeding, he or she could be considered negligent and held liable for the personal injuries suffered by the two passengers.

The accident is currently being investigated.
