Introduction to Meditation and Mindfulness is a 16 hour Continuing Education Course that takes place over two 8 hour weekend days, with a one hour lunch break. Lunch is provided.

Anyone interested in an introduction to integrating mindfulness and meditation practices into their daily lives and offering these practices to their clients. This course is appropriate for beginners as well as advanced practitioners. Course counts as 16 CEU credits for Counselors, Nurses, Group Fitness Instructors and Social Workers.
Course:
An introduction to meditation practices, mindful movement practices and journaling for a practical application in incorporating meditation and mindfulness into your personal and professional life.
Mindful movement practices include:?chi?kung, walking?meditation, and safe?asana or?hatha?yoga poses. We will practice?sitting?meditation, journaling, mindfulness practices and guided meditation including body scan and loving kindness meditation, as well as practices to help in mindful grieving and being present to loss. The days are planned with your comfort in mind as we will flow between light activity and sitting. A healthy lunch and tea will be provided both days.
In this course we will explore practices including:
1. Meditation and mindfulness theory and supporting research
2. Sitting Meditation Practice
3. Chi Kung
4. Walking Meditation
5. Hatha Yoga Asana
6. Journaling
7. Grief Support
8. Loving Kindness (Metta) Meditation
Each individual participating in the course will receive:
? A 12 week self guided outline for integrating mindful meditation ?practice into your daily life
? One Bird, One Stone, book on Zen meditation practice in America by instructor Sean Murphy
? A CD of guided meditations
Please bring:
1. Your own yoga mat (if preferred, one will be provided if needed)
2. Towel or any personal props for comfort ? optional
3. Stretchy, loose clothing appropriate for movement
4. Water bottle

Instructors:
Sean Murphy has been a Zen practitioner for 25 years. A graduate of the Naropa Institute MFA Writing program, he is the author of the American Zen chronicle One Bird, One Stone, as well as three novels. His Hope Valley Hubcap King won the Hemingway Award for a First Novel and his most recent, The Time of New Weather, was named Best Novel in the 2009?National Press Women Communications awards. He teaches meditation, creative writing and literature for UNM-Taos and has taught and presented on?Zen practice and meditation for 15 years. He is?the founder of the Sage Institute for Environment, Creativity, and Consciousness.
Mirabai Starr M.A., is the SAGE Institute Vice-President and Co-founder. Critically acclaimed author and translator of the Spanish mystics (Dark Night of the Soul: St John of the Cross; St. Teresa of Avila: The Book Of My Life). She teaches internationally on grief & transformation.
Alana Grier began her studies in Yoga, Eastern Medicine and Meditation 25 years ago and has enjoyed a well rounded career in wellness for over 20 years. Teaching Yoga, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, and wellness coaching are Alana?s passions and way of life.
Dr. Kate O?Neill will be overseeing Continuing Education Credits.
She has been the UNM Executive Director since 2006. A tenured Associate Professor of Psychology, her academic interests focus on socio-cultural psychology, mindfulness, and creativity, with a special emphasis on community college education. Kate is a graduate of the Spirit Rock Community Dharma Leadership Program, and studied Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction with John Kabat Zinn.
