4 Behaviors That Kill Your Chance Of Having A Healthy Relationship

Courtesy of EBONY.com

Ever wonder why some women seem to have an easier time in relationships than others? Sometimes it?s plain as day why a woman?s love life repeatedly play out like a version of an over the top reality show. After all, there?s no way you can have a healthy relationship with an active addict, as their primary connection is to their ?drug? of choice (be it alcohol, sex, work, etc). Or, if you can only afford to shop at Mandee or Old Navy and believe that a man should buy you Gucci or Prada, it?s safe to say that your selection process in a potential mate will be somewhatskewed ? to put it lightly.

Almost everyone I know says they want to love and be loved. And almost everyone has struggled at some point in their lives to achieve this seemingly basic need. More often than not, the reason why relationships fail is based upon the individual unresolved issues that play out in the way a couple interrelates. And while some of us have very real emotional issues that prevent us from successfully partnering, from what I?ve seen, many of the problems women face in their relationships with men come from the way we position ourselves in the beginning. It?s common knowledge that people treat you the way you let them. This may be a trite saying, but it?s a timeless truth. It?s impossible to have a healthy relationship with someone else until or unless we love ourselves first.

So in the spirit of levity, I want to offer my sisters the following four common mistakes we make when dating. I know that missteps aren?t limited by gender, but the following are behaviors I?ve seen repeatedly in women who ?love too much.? (Or shall I say, love others first):

1. Being Too Available: When he phones, answer. As a matter of fact, keep it with you at all times (even when you?re in the shower) and be sure to not let it ring more than twice. You wouldn?t want him to think you?re with someone else, do you? Also, never turn down any of his invites to spend time together. You can get your taxes done another time. After all, that?s what extensions are for. Message sent: ?The most important thing to me is being available to you. My personal life is disposable and runs second to our relationship.?

Samsung Series 9 15-inch (NP900X4C-A02US)

product 0.3
  • Pros

Equipped with solid-state drive. Long battery life.

  • Cons

Expensive. Limited free storage space. VGA and HDMI dongles not included. Ethernet dongle is proprietary.

  • Bottom Line

Samsung's updated Series 9 ultrabook gives you multimedia power and battery life, but its high price and prefilled SSD may turn you off.

The Samsung Series 9 15-inch (NP900X4C-A02US) is a high-powered ultrabook with a large screen, very good battery life, and a thin portable shell. It's good for travelling artists or power users who want to compute untethered without waiting for a hard drive to spin up. Ultimately, however, there are better options out there for the money. Design and Features
The new NP900X4C is essentially a processor update of the Samsung Series 9 15-inch (NP900X4B-A02US) we looked at last spring. It has the same 0.6-by-14-by-9.3-inch (HWD) measurements, and weighs the same (3.6 pounds). The system has a travel weight of 4.3 pounds with the AC adapter, which makes it slightly lighter than the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Retina Display) on its own (4.4 pounds). It's an ultrabook with desktop replacement dimensions, thanks to its 15-inch screen. That screen is bright, with a decent if underwhelming 1,600-by-900 resolution that's fine for viewing 720p HD content. But 15-inch laptops are aimed at people who want to display more information on their screens, like photographers and Web developers, and the 1,600-by-900 resolution may be too small for that. After all, the high-end ultrabook Editors' Choice?winning Asus Zenbook Prime UX32VD-DB71 has a 13-inch 1,920-by-1,080-resolution (1080p) screen in a much smaller package. Ultimately it's in the middle: better than the 1,366-by-768 resolution found on most systems, but you really want a higher-resolution screen to match the physically larger screen. There's a puzzling set of I/O ports on this Samsung Series 9. The two USB 3.0 ports and single USB 2.0 port (with smartphone and tablet charging capabilities) are welcome. But the system comes with several micronized ports, like the proprietary Gigabit Ethernet port (with included dongle), and micro HDMI and mini VGA ports (both of which are missing dongles). The chassis is thick enough to support full-size HDMI and Ethernet, but it seems that Samsung went with the miniature ports to help support the system's tapered design. We'd rather see a full-size HDMI port and, if needed, we'd rather see a USB 3.0?to?Ethernet dongle to give the user more flexibility. The system also has a SD card slot, audio port, and a microphone on the side panels. The NP900X4C's 62Wh battery isn't user-replaceable, but as we'll see below, that's not too much of a problem. The system comes with 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, so it will work with dual-band routers (2.4GHz and 5GHz). The one-piece touchpad is easy to use and supports multitouch gestures like two-finger swipes. Most power users will find the 8GB of memory plenty, but the included 128GB solid-state drive (SSD) is a little small?Windows 7, the recovery partition, and all the included programs leave a paltry 53GB free. Considering that Windows 7 is designed to be installable on 20GB SSDs, this small amount of free space is perplexing; perhaps all the included bloatware accounts for the extra space. The system comes with a short 60-day subscription to Norton Internet Security, and Skype, Absolute Data Protect, Kindle reader, and Wild Tangent Games are all preinstalled as well. At least the SSD helps the system to an incredibly quick boot time (10 seconds). Performance Samsung Series 9 15-inch (NP900X4C-A02US) The NP900X4C has a third-generation Intel Core i5-3317u processor, which helps it compete with other ultrabook systems. It was able to complete our Handbrake video test in 1 minute 57 seconds and the Adobe Photoshop CS5 test in 4:38. The Asus Zenbook Prime UX31A-R5102F and Asus Zenbook Prime UX31A-DB51 also have Core i5-3317u processors, so they displayed similar multimedia benchmark numbers. That said, the Zenbook Prime UX32VD-DB71 (with a Core i7) and the entry-level desktop replacement Editors' Choice?winning Sony VAIO E15 (SVE15116FXS) (with a faster Core i5) perform better overall. The NP900X4C was decidedly mediocre at gaming tests, thanks to its Intel HD Graphics 4000 integrated graphics, but the 62Wh battery let it last a long time on the MobileMark battery test: just short of 7 hours, ahead of the Zenbook Prime UX32VD (5:26) and the Sony VAIO E15 (4:34) by a wide margin. With good performance and battery life, is the Samsung Series 9 15-inch (NP900X4C-A02US) worthy of the high-end ultrabook title? Unfortunately, the answer is "not quite." Although it is fast thanks to its SSD and Core i5 processor, the 1,600-by-900 screen is a drawback on a $1,500 system. The $1,299 Asus Zenbook Prime has a much higher-resolution screen and better multimedia performance; and the Asus also has a lot more free space on its hard drive, an important factor for the busy photographer who needs to frequently download dozens of images from his camera. If you're not quite as mobile, the heavier but much less expensive Sony VAIO E15 is a better budget buy, thanks to its higher-clocked processor and sub-$750 price tag. And, of course, the MacBook Pro with Retina display is ideal for those who want scads of screen real estate (and have deeper pockets). The NP900X4C isn't bad, it's just there are better, more affordable choices out there.

Japan utility gets $12.8B nuclear crisis bailout

(AP) ? The Japanese utility that operates the nuclear power plant sent into meltdown by last year's tsunami says it has received a trillion yen ($12.8 billion) public bailout.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. apologized Tuesday for the "inconvenience and anxiety" from the disaster at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant in northeastern Japan, and for raising electricity charges to cover the costs of dealing with the crisis.

The company, now under government control, still faces massive compensation demands from those forced to evacuate and whose land and products were contaminated by spewing radiation following the disaster that began March 11 last year.

TEPCO must also shoulder the enormous costs of decommissioning three reactors at Fukushima Dai-ichi that went into meltdown. It must also put nuclear fuel at a fourth reactor there into safe storage.

Cancer claims Taunton bride weeks after dream wedding

TAUNTON, Mass. -

Just weeks after getting the wedding she had long wished for, Taunton resident Liznay Ramos died at home surrounded by family and friends after a four-year struggle with cancer.

Born and raised in Ponce, Puerto Rico, Ramos was a skilled chef and a mother of one who hoped to one day open her own restaurant, her husband told the Taunton Daily Gazette. She was 31.

?She wasn?t ready to go,? said her husband, Taunton native Norberto Ramos. ?She had a lot of plans. She was nice and caring. She was very outgoing. You don?t expect her to go so fast. She was a very family-oriented person. She was always worried about her family and about everyone else. She was always trying to make sure everyone?s else?s life was in line. She was always calling them every day.?

Ramos was the subject of a feature in the Taunton Daily Gazette in early June, talking about her wedding that was made possible through the nonprofit Wish Upon a Wedding.

The June 6 wedding at the Villa in East Bridgewater cost about $15,000, all covered by donations from a network of local businesses, coordinated by Wish Upon A Wedding.

Ramos died as a result of cervical cancer on July 12. She is survived by her husband, two-year-old son Dylan Ramos, parents Jose Humbert and Carmen Rodriguez, and a brother, David Rodriguez.

Constant medical bills prevented Ramos and her husband from being able to hold the wedding they wanted for the last two years, until a about five months ago when volunteers from Wish Upon a Wedding approached her.

?Her passing is extremely sad,? said Julia Barnes, volunteer coordinator for Wish Upon a Wedding Boston and nurse trainer at Morton Hospital. ?She loved her wedding and said she was very, very happy. ... We gave pride in giving her what she wanted in her wedding, and are very proud of that. We can look back at that and smile.?

Barnes said she remembers Ramos for her positive attitude and her compassion for others despite the seriousness of her own illness, which spread to her lungs and thigh.

Gospel is for Mothers Too

If you're new here, I would love to have you join our community. You can subscribe to my RSS feed or subscribe by email so you don't miss a thing!

Today I am excited to introduce you to our guest, Sarah Van Beveren.? Here is a little bit about Sarah:

Sarah and her husband live in Canada, where she is a stay-at-home mom and future homeschooler to their three little girls. She loves coffee, reading, researching, and studying God?s Word. Her mind is always racing, and so she organizes those thoughts with written words. Writing helps her to hear God?s voice, work through the mess, and seek out His truth. She recently started blogging at Truth in the Journey.

?Sarah writes:

Defeat.

At the end of a long day of parenting, I feel it. I look around my house and see mess. Mess on my floors and mess in my heart. I pick up toys, clean up dishes, throw in the laundry. I remember the tears, the sibling fights, and the words that I used to wound. I feel drained and lacking, praying for the encouragement to press on tomorrow morning.

I have a feeling that I?m not the only one experiencing this.

The mundane of motherhood is starting to sound clich?. We?re all reading about it, and we?re all writing about it. It resonates across countries and cultures. And while the details change, the result is the same.

We?re all living it.

Because cliches are born out of reality, and the everyday of mothering couldn?t be more real. It?s confusing, it?s busy and often it?s a struggle. But it?s also sacred, and there is rest for us. Not rest in the form of hot coffee and good books, but rest we can possess even in the midst of commotion and disarray. Rest that doesn?t rely on anything this world has to offer. A rest ? a peace ? that passes all understanding.

We don?t need to try harder. We just need to lean harder.

We have a Savior who is sufficient to cover all of our mistakes and messes. Jesus has cleared us of our debt, taken on our sin and gifted to us His righteousness. Because of His work on the cross, we are no longer slaves to guilt and regret. Christ has triumphed and has set you free to be victorious.

Your defeat is not possible, because the gospel is for mothers too.

It?s for all of us, right where we are. It doesn?t just cover our past and secure our future. It?s for now. We need to preach it to ourselves every day. Every minute if necessary, because we forget how much we need it.

Charles Spurgeon said, ?If he gives you the grace to make you believe, he will give you the grace to live a holy life afterward.?

Did you yell at your children today? Did you decline an invitation to play so that you could do something else? Did you give in to the lie that joy can?t be found here?

?There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.? (Romans 8:1)

We?ve heard it before, but there is power in these words. When you begin to feel guilty because you aren?t being a good enough mother, remember that you can?t be. We all fall short of God?s glory, but he is working a renewal in our hearts and he is patient.

I am learning that at the end of the day, when I feel weary and ask God to give me strength for tomorrow, that is not a sign of weakness. Christian growth occurs when we finally see past our blindness and realize our dependence on One alone. When we believe that we can?t, but God can.

We don?t serve a distant God, but one who loved us enough to send His son. We can?t get through this life alone, and the weariness comes when we try.

Today, let Christ be your victory.

Blessings, Sarah

Pantech Star Q spotted, headed to Verizon packing 4G LTE

Pantech Star Q

Although Pantech hasn''t had a much success in the high-end market, they're still coming out with some entry level options to entice those people who may be jumping into the smartphone market for the first time. A new device for Verizon has now appeared going under the name Pantech Star Q. It's no head turner but it considering it's suggested to retail for only $99 with 4G LTE it's worth a look:

  • Android 4.0.4
  • 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor
  • 4-inch WVGA display
  • 3 MP rear camera, front-facing camera
  • Bluetooth 4.0

It is, what it is. The 5-row QWERTY may appeal to some folks given there is a shortage of those on Verizon other than that, we know whoever has one in their possession has uploaded some pics to Picassa and certainly likes Hemp seeds. We'll leave it at that.

10 Smart Tips When Building a Shed

If you've got clutter clogging up your garage?and who doesn't?then it's time to build an outdoor storage shed. A separate outbuilding is the practical solution for storing lawnmowers, lumber, bicycles, gardening tools, ladders, and all the stuff we otherwise cram into the garage or pile up outside.

The simplest way to build a shed, especially if you're a novice do-it-yourselfer, is to buy a set of building plans. Mail-order shed plans are available from several online sources (such as betterbarns.com, storageshed-plans.com, or mybackyardplans.com) and typically include scaled drawings of the building, construction details, and a materials list that shows the size and quantity of the lumber and hardware needed.

Keep in mind that most towns require you to apply for and receive a building permit before starting construction. Call your local building department for more information. Then follow these tips to guide you through each step of the construction process. Happy building!

1. Select the Right Site

The first step might be the most important. The ideal building site should be relatively level, dry, and easily accessible. Never build in a low-lying area that collects water. The area around the shed will remain soggy. More importantly, excess moisture can rot wood, rust hinges, blister paint, and promote the growth of mold and mildew.

2. Befriend the Building Inspector

Don't be intimidated by the building inspector. He or she can be an invaluable resource when building your shed. First, the inspector will review your plans, visit the proposed site, answer any questions, and make suggestions that can save you time and money. He or she can also recommend the best building techniques and materials. And most importantly, the inspector will ensure that everything is built to code, so you'll avoid having to correct any violations.

3. Create a Sound Foundation

Proper materials are the key to a rock-solid, long-lasting foundation. Small- to medium-size sheds can be supported by an on-grade foundation made of solid-concrete blocks or pressure-treated wood timbers (aka skids) set directly on the ground. Be sure to use solid blocks for a shed foundation. Hollow-core wall blocks will eventually crack and crumble under the weight of the building. For your skids, choose pressure-treated lumber that's specifically designated for ground-contact use. Be sure the timbers are perfectly level and spaced the proper distance apart, as dictated by local building codes.

Larger sheds?those over 200 square feet?usually require permanent foundations that extend down to the frost line. Dig down to the proper depth and then pour concrete piers or bury pressure-treated posts. Check with the building department for specific code requirements and the frost-line depth in your area.

4. Build a Rot-Proof Floor

Use pressure-treated lumber when building the shed's floor frame, which includes the mudsill, floor joists, and perimeter band joists. Untreated construction lumber may cost less but in time, it'll rot.

For the shed's floorboards, use 3/4-inch-thick exterior-grade plywood. If you'd like a little more rigidity, install 3/4-inch tongue-and-groove plywood. It costs more, but the edges of the sheets lock together. And if you live in an area with excessive moisture, consider using pressure-treated plywood, which is much more weather-resistant than exterior-grade plywood.

Whatever plywood you use, fasten it down with 2-inch-long galvanized decking screws, which are rust-resistant and hold better than nails.

5. Promote Good Circulation

Another way to prevent water from rotting your shed is to build it at least 6 inches above the ground. That way, fresh air can circulate underneath and prevent moisture from accumulating there.

6. Give it Some Air

Leave at least 3 feet of open space around all four sides of the shed. Building too close to trees, shrubs, or fences will block sunlight and wind, and the shed will remain damp. (Mold and mildew hate direct sunlight.) Plus, having that extra clearance space makes it much easier to paint or repair your new building.

7. Build Roof Trusses

Framing a roof in the traditional manner?with individual rafters, ridge board, and collar ties?can be challenging for novice DIYers. An easier approach is to build roof trusses on the floor deck, and then raise each truss into position after the walls are up. A roof truss is simply a prefabricated assembly of two rafters fastened to a collar tie or ceiling joist. The truss parts are usually held together with plywood gusset plates that are glued and screwed across the joints. Trusses are typically spaced 16 inches on center, and positioned directly above a wall stud.

8. Use Windows Wisely

Since most storage sheds don't have electricity, install windows to brighten up the interior. Otherwise you'll have to use a flashlight every time you enter the shed, day or night.

But don't make the mistake of using too many windows. For each window you install, you sacrifice wall space that could be used to hang tools, mount shelves, or attach a perforated pegboard. For an average-size shed, the optimum window layout includes two windows on the front fa?ade and one window on one end wall. That leaves the rear wall and one end wall windowless.

Install windows on the south- and east-facing walls if you can, as this will let in the most sunlight. If you'd like lots of sunlight but need wall space for storage, install skylights.

9. Double Door

For small- to medium-size sheds, a single pair of swinging doors is fine. But for a large shed, one bigger than about 10 x 12 feet, you'd be wise to install two pairs of doors. You can install one pair on the front fa?ade and the other on an end wall, or install one pair of doors on each end wall. Either way, having two entrances makes it much easier to reach items that might be buried in the back once your shed starts filling up.

10. Don't DIY Everything

Some parts of shed-building are simply too time-consuming and exhausting to do yourself. Hire a landscaping contractor to clear rocks, trees, and thick underbrush. Bring in an excavator to level an uneven building site or to dig postholes. Hire a mason to mix and pour concrete footings and slabs. And hire a licensed electrician if you decide to electrify the shed.

Administration projects $1.2T 2012 budget deficit

(AP) ? The White House predicts this year's federal budget deficit will end up at $1.2 trillion, marking the fourth consecutive year of trillion dollar-plus deficits during President Barack Obama's administration.

The bleak figures, while expected, are sure to add fuel to the already heated presidential campaign, in which Obama's handling of the economy and the budget is a main topic. Friday's release came as the government announced that U.S. economic growth slowed to an annual rate of just 1.5 percent in the second quarter of this year, as consumers cut back sharply on spending.

The White House budget office also predicts for this year that the economy will grow at a modest 2.6 percent annual rate and that the jobless rate will average 8 percent. It forecasts modest growth of 2.6 percent next year ? down from the 3.0 percent it predicted in February ? before rising to 4.0 percent in 2014. Unemployment would remain above 7 percent through the end of 2014, registering at 7.3 percent, the report predicts.

"The economic recovery that began in 2009 will continue at a moderate rate and unemployment will gradually decline," Jeffrey Zients, the acting White House budget director said in a blog post. "The economy still faces significant headwinds," he added.

The 2012 budget year ends on Sept. 30. The White House also predicted that next year's deficit will fall just short of $1 trillion, higher than it predicted in its February budget release. The predicted deficit for 2012 actually improved by $116 billion, but some of that was because Congress didn't enact much of Obama's jobs plan.

But the White House promises deficits will drop to about 3 percent of the size of the economy by 2017, in part through $1.5 trillion in tax increases over the coming decade.

The White House report ? released Friday afternoon with the Olympics poised to distract voters for two weeks ? again trumpets Obama's longstanding approach to tackling the deficit. It includes tax increases on families earning above $250,000, already enacted "caps" on agency operating budgets and modest savings from federal benefit programs like Medicare and Medicaid.

"Since taking office, the president has worked to restore fiscal responsibility," says the OMB report.

Republicans scoffed, noting that Obama has violated his promise to wrestle the deficit in half by the end of his term.

"The president's string of broken promises on our nation's fiscal challenges weighs heavy on an anemic economy," said House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis. "The president's commitment to ever-higher government spending and his failure to deliver on his economic promises have resulted in the fourth-straight budget deficit in excess of one trillion dollars."

Under Obama's budget plan, the total U.S. debt would reach $16.2 trillion by the end of the year and soar to $25.4 trillion at the end of a decade's time.

"America can have robust economic growth ? and avert a catastrophic debt crisis ? but it requires a credible fiscal plan and the leadership necessary to achieve it," said top Senate Budget Committee Republican, Jeff Sessions of Alabama.

The government is likely to reach its borrowing cap ? the subject of a fierce fight last summer between Obama and Republicans ? late this year or early next year, which is going to require the next Congress and either Romney or Obama to act together to increase the borrowing cap. That is seen by many as an opportunity to force lawmakers to finally tackle the country's major budget problems.

Also looming is the so-called fiscal cliff, a combination of big tax increases and deep, automatic budget cuts slated to begin in January unless Obama and congressional Republicans step in to block them this fall or during a postelection session of Congress. Many economists say that if the government plunges over the fiscal cliff it could drive the economy back into recession.

Romney, for his part, offers relatively few specifics on the budget but promises to bring total government spending down to 20 percent of the U.S. economy by the end of a first term in 2016. That is roughly in line with where it was during Republican George W. Bush's presidency. Government spending now equals 24 percent of gross domestic product.

?UNMASKED?, JUDEO PHOBIA SCREENED AT LIBRARY 8/1 ...

Anti-semitism is not only the longest known form of hatred in the history of humanity. It is the only form of hatred that is truly global.

In her film, ?Unmasked Judeophobia, The Threat to Civilization,? Gloria Greenfield contends that the 1975 UN Resolution equating Zionism with racism served as the global debut of a new, sophisticated, virulent, and lethal strain of anti-Semitism. The new anti-Semitism portrays the collective body of Jews, Israelis, and Zionists as the evil power in the world and the Jewish state?s existence as the source of the world?s ills. And yet, in an era when human rights is considered by many to be the universal secular religion, there is general silence on the subject.

The Wilkinson Public Library screens ?Unmasked? Wednesday, August 1, 5:30 p.m? for a pre-show reception. The screening begins promptly at 6 p.m. Gloria Greenfield will be in attendance to answers questions.

?Unmasked? puts the facts on the table. In Europe, synagogues have been burned, rabbis have been abused in the streets, Jewish children have been physically attacked and murdered on the way to school and inside schools, and Jewish cemeteries have been desecrated. In Canada, Jewish students were attacked on York campus. In the U.S., Jewish students fear for their safety on UC Irvine and UC Santa Clara campuses.? In 2012, Israel Apartheid Week programs were held in two dozen U.S. cities and on college campuses (Florida Atlantic University, Bard College, Florida State University, Columbia University). And former U.S. President Jimmy Carter wrote a book ?Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid,? comparing Israel to South Africa.

Eli Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor who has dedicated his life to fighting antisemitism, opens the film with the following:

?Since 1945 I was not as afraid as I am now. I?m afraid because anti-Semitism that I thought belonged to the past, somehow survived. I was convinced in ?45 that anti-Semitism had died with its Jewish victims at Auschwitz and Treblinka, but I see, no, the Jews perished but anti-Semitism in some parts of the world is flourishing.?

The film covers statements by the Iranian President Ahmadinejad saying that Israel must be wiped off the map, and reactions to his comments worldwide. On this issue, Greenfield cites a comment from the film by Alvin H. Rosenfeld, the director of the Institute for the Study of Contemporary Anti-Semitism in Indiana, who says:
?One of the lessons of the Holocaust is that we have to be literalists. When we hear somebody say, ?Kill the Jews,? we have to realize, they probably mean it.?
?Unmasked? is not only educational, it is also a call to wake up, to stand up and be counted because indifference or neutrality is no longer an option.

Greenfield brings over 30 years of strategic planning, marketing, and management experience to her current work dedicated to the strengthening of Jewish identity and Jewish peoplehood.

San Diego Personal Injury Lawyers Helping Those Harmed by ...

One of the most common mistakes that people make while they are
behind the wheels of vehicles is exceeding the speed limit. Most if not
all of us has either made the conscious decision to speed or we have
realized that we were speeding after failing to pay attention for some
period of time. Unfortunately, many people think this mistake is
relatively harmless. However, the reality of the situation is that
speeding is a mistake that creates danger for anyone and everyone who
may be nearby at the time.

Below you will find a brief overview of the problems associated with
speeding and why those who engage in this conduct create a situation of
danger for everyone involved. You will also find information regarding
different remedies that could be available to those who have been harmed
by speeding drivers. Anyone who has been harmed in this manner needs to
obtain the help of experienced San Diego personal injury lawyers as soon as possible.

Why Speeding is Dangerous

When a motorist exceeds the speed limit even by a relatively small
amount, he or she is basically reducing if not removing any margin of
error that would otherwise exist relative to other vehicles in the
vicinity. When one moves at a faster rate, that driver will not have as
much time to make decisions, to take evasive measures if necessary and
to otherwise avoid danger. When vehicles are moving at high speeds,
every fraction of a second matters enormously.

In addition, when someone is speeding, he or she is moving with a
greater degree of force than someone who is not. Therefore, when
collisions occur that involve at least one driver who was speeding, the
force of impact is higher. This basic reality of physics leads to a much
higher probability of serious injuries and fatalities when crashes
occur.

Remedies for Those Harmed by Speeding Drivers

When someone is badly injured because of mistakes made by a driver
who was speeding at the time, he or she does have legal rights and
options available if that person decides to take action. One of the most
common responses is to file a California personal injury lawsuit
against that driver, as speeding would usually be considered negligent
conduct. If such a lawsuit is filed and it?s successful, it could lead
to an award of damages that includes compensation for medical costs,
lost income and pain and suffering.

How San Diego Personal Injury Lawyers Can Help

However, when someone decides to take legal action, proving that
someone was speeding at the time of a crash can be difficult. It can
require expert testimony and other evidence that would require legal
knowledge and experience to provide. If you or someone you love has been
injured because of this common mistake, you need to seek the help of San Diego personal injury lawyers who have been holding those responsible for this type of harm accountable for many years. Contact the Mitchell | Gilleon Law Firm today to schedule a free initial consultation.

Should I pay for college with a cash-out refi? - The Help Desk - CNN

I own a house worth $400,000 and have $160,000 outstanding on my mortgage. Is it a good idea to refinance the mortgage at about 3% for a 15-year mortgage and cash out about $100,000 equity to pay for my kids' college? Because the interest rate is so low and mortgage interest is tax deductible, I thought this might be a good plan. I am 48 and my wife is 45. I am currently eligible to retire at a half pension and we have been saving in a 457 plan for 20-plus years. ? Mark S.

At first blush, taking advantage of 3% mortgage rates to pay for your kids' college educations sounds like a good idea. After all, PLUS loans, which colleges offer directly to parents, typically carry interest rates around 8%.

But borrowing to pay for college is only a good idea if it doesn't affect your ability to save for retirement, says Matt DiVirgilio, president of?DiVirgilio Financial Group in?Lynn, Mass. If you can keep up your 457 contributions and make your new monthly mortgage payments at the same time, then you're in good shape. But if your retirement is underfunded, borrowing against the value of your home now could create a financial hole in retirement that's too big to recover from.

If you do decide to refinance, DiVirgilio recommends that you skip the 15-year loan in favor of a 30-year loan ? but that you still plan on paying off that loan in 15 years. Reason: You'll be able to fall back on the 30-year loan's lower monthly payment if you run into financial trouble ? say, from job loss or some other unexpected crisis. "Of course," adds DiVirgilio, "you first have to ask yourself if you have the discipline to stick to the 15-year plan."

AT&T reveals new multi-beam antenna tech for live events, could offer data speeds five times faster (video)

AT&T reveals new multibeam antenna tech for live events, promises five times the speed

AT&T's improving its coverage at live events by establishing a new (impressive sounding) setup -- the five-beam multi-beam antenna. It works by dividing its customers' signals into five narrow parts, illustrated above by the color bands, upping the bandwidth by splitting traffic to each segment, enabling up to five times the data traffic. Ma Bell even used similar technology to craft a "super" multi-beam antenna, which expands the same idea into two rows of nine, possibly offering up to 18 times the speed of a typical single-tower arrangement. AT&T adds that this setup also reduces dropped calls and failed uploads, and is apparently already being put to use at live concerts and games. Not quite wrapping your head around it? Check the video after the break.

Most Websites Are Blind To These Babies Toddler Suggestions ...

Adoption is incredibly complicated and expensive and you shouldn?t make the decision lightly or without careful thought. There are lots of
different kinds of adoption and you need to think about the sort of child that you would be interested in adopting. You need to make sure you are well versed in your local laws and it is a good idea to work with a lawyer. If you want to adopt a child here are some major issues to think about.

Depending on where you live, there are many different laws and requirements regarding adoption. In many states in the U.S., for example, a child must live with you for a certain amount of time, often six months, before the adoption is actually finalized. If everything goes well, however, this is mainly a formality and there?s no reason why the adoption shouldn?t go through as planned. It is important to become well versed in your local laws before you start the process of adoption so that you don?t become unpleasantly surprised later on. You can either consult with an adoption lawyer or do your own research about adoption laws in your area, and if there?s anything you?re not clear about, you can ask the adoption agency you plan to work with. You have to think about a lot of different things when you are trying to figure out whether you want to adopt a child from your current country or one from outside its borders. One reason that many people opt for international adoption is that it lowers the risk that the birth mother will change her mind and want to take her child back. While this isn?t very common, it can happen with a domestic adoption, and in most cases, the mother has a certain window of opportunity to change her mind. International adoption all but renders this possibility mute. For one thing, most of the children being adopted are orphans and even if they aren?t, the parents almost never try to get their kids back.

A very high percentage of the kids who need to be adopted are labeled ?special needs.? This term is quite broad and it?s meanings are wide and varied.

Most commonly, it refers to children who have a health problem or disability, either physical, mental or emotional. It is also used for other things and can sometimes refer to even the age or the race of a child. This label is often given to kids over a certain age, for example, because it is harder for the older kids to find families who are okay adopting an older child. Some adoption agencies use it to label children simply because they are of certain minority races or ethnic backgrounds because it is harder to find parents who want to adopt children from these backgrounds. Sometimes just being male is enough to be labeled as a special needs child because there are far more male children than female children who need adoption. If you are hoping to adopt a child you might be overwhelmed by just how much red tape is involved in it. This is why it is important not to get bogged down and, instead to take each step as it comes. These requirements are in place to make sure that adoptions are carried out properly and that prospective parents are well qualified. As long as you are dogged and truly ready to become a parent you should be able to achieve your dream. What You Have to do to Adopt a Child Adopting a child is a major and life changing decision and can take years to see through so it is important that you make sure you ready to commit to it. At the same time, for couples who are not able to have children of their own for one reason or another, adoption can be well worth the effort. Beyond helping you get your own family started, you are also giving the gift of a loving home to a boy or girl who wouldn?t have that otherwise. After doing as much research into the adoption process as you can, you should look for an agency to handle it. Choosing an adoption agency is something that you have to be careful with, the decision is almost as important as the decision of which child you most want to adopt. For one thing, you must ensure that your adoption agency is totally legal and has all of the necessary licensing to operate where it operates. It?s most likely that your agency is legal?most of them are?but that doesn?t mean that it might not also be a scam operation set up to prey upon your desperation and eagerness to adopt. Also be sure that you understand all of the fees that will be involved in the process. Check out how long the agency has been operating. Finally, it is important to ensure that your agency offers services post-adoption to address any issues that may crop up after you?ve adopted your son or daughter.

Money and filling out paperwork are only two parts of the adoption process. You also have to meet the child and visit him or her several times before making a final decision. These visits usually happen over a few weeks or even a few months. Not only will this help you decide about adoption as a whole, it will help you decide about adopting this specific kid. This is important for everyone but it is especially helpful to first time parents who get to gain some practical parenting experience with the child they are hoping to adopt. In addition to you and your partner, the child and the agency also need to have a meeting of the minds to help everyone make sure that the arrangement is one that is in everyone?s best interest.

Today in History

Today is Wednesday, July 25, the 207th day of 2012. There are 159 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On July 25, 1972, the notorious Tuskegee syphilis experiment came to light as The Associated Press reported that for the previous four decades, the U.S. Public Health Service, in conjunction with the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, had been allowing poor, rural black male patients with syphilis to go without treatment, even allowing them to die, as a way of studying the disease.

On this date:

In 1866, Ulysses S. Grant was named General of the Army of the United States, the first officer to hold the rank.

In 1898, the United States invaded Puerto Rico during the Spanish-American War.

In 1909, French aviator Louis Bleriot (bleh-ree-OH') became the first person to fly an airplane across the English Channel, traveling from Calais (kah-LAY') to Dover in 37 minutes.

In 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt froze Japanese assets in the United States in retaliation for Japan's occupation of southern Indochina.

In 1946, the United States detonated an atomic bomb near Bikini Atoll in the Pacific in the first underwater test of the device.

In 1952, Puerto Rico became a self-governing commonwealth of the United States.

In 1956, the Italian liner Andrea Doria collided with the Swedish passenger ship Stockholm off the New England coast late at night and began sinking; at least 51 people were killed.

In 1960, a Woolworth's store in Greensboro, N.C., that had been the scene of a sit-in protest against its whites-only lunch counter dropped its segregation policy.

In 1962, the Bell System inaugurated Skyphone, an air-to-ground radiotelephone service, as American Airlines stewardess Hope Patterson placed a call to Associated Press writer Francis Stilley in New York while flying over Lakehurst, N.J.

In 1984, Soviet cosmonaut Svetlana Savitskaya (sah-VEETS'-kah-yah) became the first woman to walk in space as she carried out more than three hours of experiments outside the orbiting space station Salyut 7.

In 1992, opening ceremonies were held in Barcelona, Spain, for the Summer Olympics.

In 2000, a New York-bound Air France Concorde crashed outside Paris shortly after takeoff, killing all 109 people on board and four people on the ground; it was the first-ever crash of the supersonic jet.

Ten years ago: Encouraged by a tapping sound coming up from the depths, rescuers in Somerset, Pa., brought in a huge drill in a race to save nine coal miners trapped 240 feet underground by a flooded shaft. Zacarias Moussaoui (zak-uh-REE'-uhs moo-SOW'-ee) declared he was guilty of conspiracy in the September 11 attacks, then dramatically withdrew his plea at his arraignment in Alexandria, Va.

Five years ago: A presidential commission urged broad changes to veterans' care that would boost benefits for family members helping the wounded, establish an easy-to-use Web site for medical records and overhaul the way disability pay was awarded. The bullet-riddled body of one of 23 South Koreans held hostage in Afghanistan by Taliban kidnappers was found; eight other captives were released. Pratibha Patil (PRUH'-tee-bah puh-TIHL') was sworn in as India's first female president.

One year ago: In a prime-time address to the nation, President Barack Obama made a last-ditch call for compromise on raising the government's borrowing ability before an Aug. 2 deadline; in a rebuttal, House Speaker John Boehner said negotiations with the White House had been futile. The NFL Players Association executive board and 32 team reps voted unanimously to approve the terms of a deal to end a 4?-month lockout.

Tens of thousands receive same death threat via text message

Authorities have no way of knowing if anyone believed the claims

Some may find texts from their friends or loved ones annoying at times, but brief, pointless messages are nothing compared to seeing a death threat pop up on your smartphone screen. That was the reality for tens of thousands of Australians today when an unknown perpetrator sent out a mass text message demanding cash and threatening the lives of the recipients.

Australian authorities believe that tens of thousands of mobile phone users received this text message from a "0000" number: "Sum1 paid me to kill you. get spared, 48hrs to pay $5000. If you inform the police or anybody, death is promised. E-mail me now: killerking247@yahoo.com" Of course, despite the sender's hopes to avoid police involvement, thousands of calls began to flood local authorities.

The email address in question has been taken down, but it remains unclear if anyone actually fell for the scam. Police believe that the total number of victims may be in the tens of thousands or more, and it's impossible to tell how many recipients are still in fear for their lives. At this time, authorities insist there is no immediate danger and note that this isn't the first time someone has tried such a scam.

Your feet may soon be your password

17 hrs.

Shoes outfitted with high-tech soles that can confirm a person?s identity in just a few steps may soon serve as our keycards and?computer passwords, and could?even let doctors know when we show signs of dementia.

They work by combing physical and behavioral biometrics ? measurements of a foot?s shape and person?s gait, for example.

Both the shape of our feet and how we walk are unique, explained Todd Gray, chairman and president of Autonomous ID.?

An algorithm fuses this information to create an anonymous ID that is stored on a tiny chip in the insole.

?Not even the user knows what it is,? he told me.

This ID is used, for example, to unlock your door you are within a few feet of it.?

?There is nothing to remember, nothing to swipe, nothing to touch, no backend system to incorporate the authenticity of the biometric,? he said.

Gray said he started working on the concept in 2007 when Iraqi insurgents dressed in U.S. uniforms walked onto a base and abducted U.S. soldiers.

The concept is considered more secure and private than, say, using a fingerprint or eye scan to gain entry to a high security area.

?If your thumb is the only access into a door, they are going to cut it off,? Gray said. ?This is war.?

Autonomous ID partnered this July with Carnegie Mellon University?s Pedo-Biometrics Research and Identity Automation Lab to authenticate and fine tune the technology.

The lab is to receive $1.5 million per year in funding for the venture.

The team will also probe the potential to use the technology as a way to detect early warning signs of diseases such as Parkinson?s and dementia, which can affect how we walk.

Changes in gait, which the insole would notice, could be monitored for a few weeks, explained Mario Savvides, the lab?s director.

?We haven?t started working on this yet, but once we do, it is going to open up a whole new world of possibility,? he told me.

TWITTER: Sexual assault victim faces contempt charge for tweets

censorship-twitter.jpg

A US teen is currently facing a contempt of court charge, which could see her carry out a 180 day prison sentence, because she tweeted the names of two boys who sexually assaulted her.

Savannah Dietrich was assaulted back in August 2011 and since then the two boys pleaded guilty to sexual abuse and misdemeanor voyeurism, before striking a deal with the judge.

Although no one has been able to reveal the exact details of the deal, Dietrich and her family believe the plea bargain has been far too lenient, which led her to talk about the case publicly on Twitter in an attempt to ensure the attackers faced more serious consequences in the future.

Dietrich tweeted the names of the two boys and then said, "I'm not protecting anyone that made my life a living Hell." She's now facing the contempt charge because she violated the confidentiality of the juvenile hearing, which could now see her serve a 180 day prison sentence and pay a $500 fine.

The case has caused a huge stir and as you can imagine opinions have really been divided. There have been many professional views published online over the past few days (we don't care about the victim blaming trolls, yes, that's happening *voms*), with some saying she should never have violated the confidentiality of the court regardless of the medium and others claiming her First Amendment rights should allow her to talk about the details of the case more freely.

Dietrich's case could certainly set a precedent for any future incidents that bring freedom of speech online into question, but regardless of the outcome she's standing by her decision to name her attackers publicly, saying, "I'm at the point that if I have to go to jail for my rights, I will do it."

The 16th Australian Agronomy Conference, to be held at the University of New England in October, will include presentations by the President of the National Farmers? federation, Jock Laurie, and a former Chief of CSIRO?s Division of Tropical Crops and Pastures, Dr Bob Clements.

There will also be a presentation by the Chair of the Agricultural Committee of the International Fertiliser Association (IFA) in France, Patrick Heffer. Mr Heffer?s role in IFA includes the international coordination of all issues relating to fertiliser use, innovation and research. He will speak at the conference on the future supply of fertiliser raw materials and finished products to Australia.

More than 250 delegates from around Australia ? and from New Zealand, South-east Asia and Africa ? will attend the Australian Society of Agronomy?s biennial conference, which will include field tours to a wide range of innovative agricultural enterprises and research stations in the New England region.

The conference, scheduled for October 14 ? 18, 2012, is titled Capturing Opportunities and Overcoming Obstacles in Australian Agronomy. ?Opportunities? and ?obstacles? in plant breeding, nutrient supply and management, weed management, precision agriculture, and chemical-free agriculture are among the topics for discussion.

The President of the Australian Society of Agronomy, UNE?s Professor Graeme Blair, said the theme of the conference reflected ?the challenge for Australia to increase food and fibre production in a sustainable manner in the face of increasing barriers to the adoption of new technologies?. ?These barriers are being raised by a burgeoning urban population that is remote from the realities of agriculture but wants cheap and safe food,? he said.

Dr Clements, a UNE graduate whose research at CSIRO helped to boost the viability of livestock industries in northern Australia, will speak about the contribution of Australian agronomy to world food security over the past 20 years, and look at what lies ahead. In his role as Director of the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research, he helped to open doors for Australian agricultural scientists in many Asian countries.

The Australian Society of Agronomy is the professional body for agronomists in Australia and New Zealand. Its members are drawn from government, universities, research organisations and the private sector. A highlight of the Society?s biennial conference is the presentation of the Donald Medal to an eminent agriculturalist. The medal honours the memory of Colin Donald, who was Professor of Agronomy at the University of Adelaide from 1954 to 1973.

Fellowships of the Society will be presented for the first time to agronomists who have made significant contributions to Australian agronomy.

Another event at the conference will be the presentation of the Young Agronomist Award, worth $1,000, to an outstanding agronomist under the age of 35.

Professor Blair said that the Society was encouraging farmers to attend the conference ?to learn about the latest in agronomic advances?. Details of the event can be found at www.agronomy.org.au or by contacting Professor Blair at gblair@une.edu.au.
