How Great Entrepreneurs Create Their Own Luck

696This is the story of how a young British fine artist accidentally became a materials scientist, founding a high-growth company that created a whole new product category. It?s also a parable for how great entrepreneurs systematically create their own luck. Jane ni Dhulchaointigh is the founder and CEO of Sugru, a London-based startup that makes an amazing moldable adhesive for repairing any physical object. It?s a cross between silly putty and duct tape, a space age rubber that can be molded into any desired shape by hand, and that sticks to a vast array of surfaces. With customers in over 100 countries, and all seven continents, Sugru has taken the world by storm.

MetroPCS announces Q1 2012 results: total revenues up, new subscriber growth shrinks

Regional network MetroPCS has announced total revenues of approximately $1.3 billion for Q1 2012, up from $1.2 bilion in the last quarter and up seven percent from the same period in 2011. Users on contract now total 9.5 million, with 16 percent of them making the move across to a smartphone. Net income has, however, dropped 63 percent since Q1 2011, with cost per user up 16 percent compared the same period last year. MetroPCS puts down to "retention expense" and the roll-out of its 4G network. The fifth biggest US carrier added over 131,000 new subscribers, but growth continues to slide -- it's down from 190,000 in Q4 2012. On the positive side, users are creeping onto the carrier's 4G network, with 580,000 LTE subscribers nowmaking up six percent of its total subscription base -- regardless of those creeping costs for unlimited data.

Happy 70th Birthday, Barbra Streisand!

Barbra Streisand turned 70 this week. Seventy!

The star marked the milestone with a party to remember in Malibu, Calif., on Tuesday, celebrating with close friends and enjoying a performance by Johnny Mathis.

The legendary singer-actress was joined at Taverna Tony by 80 guests, including John Travolta, Warren Beatty, Pierce Brosnan and Keely Smith, Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw, her stepson Josh Brolin and Diane Lane, Kenny G and Donna Karan.

"It was an intimate magical event with only very close friends, people I've known and loved more than 20 years," Streisand personally told People.

"The highlight of the night was my son's film that he made for me. People kept asking, 'Who's that singing?' And when I said it was Jason, everyone was blown away by the soulfulness of his voice. Quincy Jones wanted to sign him on the spot."

"All my friends made it an evening full of surprises for me, flying in the remarkable Israeli mentalist Lior Suchard and gifting me with the performance of my favorite singer, Johnny Mathis, and many, many more highlights."

Happy birthday to one of the greats! In her career, Barbra has won two Academy Awards, eight Grammy Awards, five Emmy Awards and a Tony Award, one of a select few entertainers who have ever won all four. Not a bad resume.

Octomom: Should Her Kids Be Taken Away?

Should Octomom Nadya Suleman have custody of her 14 kids transferred to local officials? She's clearly in way over her head, and currently under investigation by DCFS over the horrendous living conditions in her La Habra, Calif., residence.

This has renewed debate over what is in the children's best interest.

Octo Mom

Octomom's hairstylist, Stephanie, called the cops on her after laying eyes on the squalor - one working toilet, graffiti, malnourished and unclean bodies - first hand.

DCFS officials are deciding what to do with the children, though Orange County police said Wednesday that no criminal investigation against Nadya is pending.

Cops who conducted preliminary interviews at the home said “no crimes were noticed,” but that doesn't mean she can't - and shouldn't - give up her brood.

Sad as it is, if kids are defecating outside, sleeping on floors and getting locked in rooms while Nadya Suleman does chores, would they be better off elsewhere?

No one wants a family to be broken up, but she's not doing those kids - or taxpayers - any favors right now. Tell us: Should Octomom's kids be taken away?

Jon Stewart Is As Excited About Mining Asteroids As We Are [Video]

It's hard to suppress your little-kid joy when a news story drops like the prospect of asteroid mining. Clearly Jon Stewart agrees; on last night's Daily Show, he sparkled with awe while covering the story at length. Highlights include an apt Armageddon reference, and a short but oh-so-sweet cameo by one Neil DeGrasse Tyson. [The Daily Show] More »
