(AP) ? Mitt Romney scored a hard-won, home state triumph in Michigan and powered to victory in Arizona Tuesday night, gaining a two-state primary sweep over Rick Santorum and precious momentum in the most turbulent Republican presidential race in a generation.

"We didn't win by a lot, but we won by enough," Romney told cheering supporters in Michigan. He also tweeted his delight ? and his determination: "I take great pride in my Michigan roots, and am humbled to have received so much support here these past few weeks.

"On to the March contests," he said, looking ahead to next week's Super Tuesday races that could go a long way toward determining the Republican who will take on Democratic President Barack Obama this fall.

Santorum was already campaigning in Ohio, one of next week's states, when the verdict came in from Michigan.

"A month ago they didn't know who we are, but they do now," he told his own supporters, vowing to stay the conservative course he has set.

The two other candidates, Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul, made little effort in either Michigan or Arizona, pointing instead to next week's collection of contests in all corners of the country.

Romney's Arizona triumph came in a race that was scarcely contested, and he pocketed all of the 29 Republican National Convention delegates at stake in the winner-take-all state.

Michigan was as different as could be ? a hard-fought and expensive battle in Romney's home state that he could ill afford to lose and Santorum made every effort to win.

Returns from 88 percent of Michigan's precincts showed Romney at 41 percent and Santorum at 38 percent. Paul was winning 12 percent of the vote to 7 percent for Gingrich. In Arizona, with votes counted from 64 percent of the precincts, Romney had 48 percent, Santorum 26, Gingrich 16 percent and Paul 8 percent.

In Michigan, 30 delegates were apportioned according to the popular vote. Two were set aside for the winner of each of the state's 14 congressional districts. The remaining two delegates were likely to be divided between the top finishers in the statewide vote.

With his victory in Arizona, Romney had 152 delegates, according to The AP's count, compared to 72 for Santorum, 32 for Gingrich and 19 for Paul. It takes 1,144 to win the nomination at the Republican National Convention in Tampa next summer.

In interviews as they left their polling places, Michigan voters expressed a notable lack of enthusiasm about their choices. Just 45 percent said they strongly favored the candidate they voted for, while 38 percent expressed reservations and 16 percent said they made the choice they did because they disliked the alternatives.

The lengthening GOP nomination struggle has coincided with a rise in Democratic President Barack Obama's prospects for a new term. A survey released during the day showed consumer confidence at the highest level in a year, and other polls show an increase in Americans saying they believe the country is on the right track.

Along with the improving economy, the long and increasingly harsh campaign, in which Gingrich and Santorum have challenged Romney as insufficiently conservative, has prompted some officials to express concern about the party's chances of defeating Obama in the fall.

Romney signaled he intends to stick to his core campaign message of fixing the economy and reducing unemployment in a nation still recovering from the worst recession in decades.

"More jobs, less debt and smaller government ? you're going to hear that" over and over in the states ahead, he said.

Exit polling showed a plurality of Republican voters in both Michigan and Arizona saying the most important factor to them in the primaries was that a candidate be able to beat Obama in November. Romney won that group in Michigan, where it mattered most, and also prevailed among voters in the state who said experience was the quality that mattered most.

Santorum ran particularly well among voters who cited a desire for strong conservatism or strong moral character.

The polls surveyed both primary day and absentee or early voters. Interviews were conducted at 30 polling places in each state. Early results from Arizona's poll included interviews with 2,535 voters, including 601 absentee or early voters interviewed by phone. In Michigan it was 2,200 interviews including 412 absentee or early voters interviewed by telephone. The margin of sampling error for the Michigan poll was plus or minus 4 percentage points, it was 3 points in Arizona.

Not even the opening of polls on Tuesday brought an end to the squabbling between the two leading Republicans.

Romney accused Santorum of trying to hijack a victory in Michigan by courting Democratic votes through automated telephone calls and suggested his rival was appealing to conservatives by making the kind of "incendiary" statements he would not.

"I'm not willing to light my hair on fire to try and get support," Romney said. "I am what I am."

Santorum brushed aside the allegations of hijacking, saying Romney had appealed for support from independents in earlier states.

"We're going to get voters that we need to be able to win this election. And we're going to do that here in Michigan today," Santorum said, referring to blue collar voters with a history of swinging between the parties.

The exit poll said about 10 percent of the day's Michigan primary voters were Democrats.

If nothing else, the unexpected clash on Romney's home field dramatized that two months into the campaign season ? after nearly a dozen primaries and caucuses ? the GOP race to pick an opponent for President Barack Obama remains unpredictable.

Unopposed for renomination, Obama timed a campaign-style appearance before United Auto Workers Union members in Washington for the same day as the Michigan primary. Attacking Republicans, he said assertions that union members profited from a taxpayer-paid rescue of the auto industry in 2008 are a "load of you know what."

All of the Republicans running for the White House opposed the bailout, but even in the party's Michigan primary a survey of voters leaving polling places showed about four in ten supported it.

Michigan loomed as a key test for Romney as he struggled to reclaim his early standing as front-runner in the race. The first of the industrial battleground states to vote in the nominating campaign, it is also the place where the former Massachusetts governor was born and where he won a primary when he first ran for the party nomination four years ago.

But Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, rolled into the state on the strength of surprising victories on Feb. 7 in caucuses in Minnesota and Colorado plus a non-binding primary in Missouri. He quickly sought to stitch together the same coalition of conservatives and tea party activists that carried him to a narrow victory in the Iowa caucuses that opened the campaign nearly two months ago.

The Michigan primary was open to Republicans or any voter who declared they were Republican for the purpose of voting, and there was precedent for an influx of outsiders influencing the outcome.

A dozen years ago, John McCain defeated the heavily favored George W. Bush, relying on the support of Michigan independents and Democrats. Exit polls then showed that Bush won 66 percent of Republican votes, while McCain won 82 percent of self-described Democrats and 67 percent of independents. Together, the non-Republican voters accounted for more than half the electorate.

In a measure this year of the state's importance to the battle for the nomination, the two leading candidates and the super PACs that support them spent about $6 million on television advertisements, and Romney and Santorum spent much of the past 10 days crisscrossing the state in search of support.

Arizona was Romney's to lose, judging by the behavior of his rivals, who spent little time campaigning in the state and no money advertising on its television airwaves.

There are 40 delegates at stake in Washington caucuses on Saturday, followed by 419 on Super Tuesday, including big state primaries in Ohio and Georgia.

Already, the television advertising wars were under way. Romney and restore Our Future, the super PAC that supports him, have spent more than $3 million combined on ads in Ohio.

In Michigan, Santorum campaigned heavily for the support of tea party activists and other non-establishment Republicans, appearing in churches at times and often dwelling on social issues, as is his custom. In a string of attention-gathering remarks in the race's final days, he said Obama was a snob who wanted everyone to attend college, said he nearly threw up over a speech that candidate John F. Kennedy gave in 1960 about the separation of church and state, and said Romney was uniquely unqualified to defeat Obama because the two men shared so much in common on issues like health care.

The former Massachusetts governor made a play for tea party support, too, at a pair of appearances, but for the most part campaigned on his pledge to use his background as a successful businessman to help create jobs and fix the economy. Last week, he issued a call for 20 percent across-the-board cuts in personal income tax rates.

But he was hampered by off-the-cuff comments that reinforced his difficulty in reaching out to struggling voters in a state with 9.3 percent unemployment. He said at one point that his wife drives a couple of Cadillacs, and at another that he was friends with some of the owners of NASCAR teams.

At a rare news conference after the polls opened on Tuesday, he conceded that his own mistakes had hurt his campaign.

The primaries in Michigan and Arizona were the first contests since Romney squeaked out a victory over Paul in the Maine caucuses on Feb. 11, a lull of two and a half weeks.

Except for a debate in Arizona last Wednesday and a brief burst of campaigning in the hours before and after, Romney and Santorum have focused their time and campaign money on Michigan.

Polls showed Santorum racing to a large advantage after his victories on Feb. 7, before the weight of attack ads by a Romney-aligned super PAC and the candidate himself began to narrow and finally erase the gap in many surveys.

In the end, the combination of Romney and the outside group accounted for about $3.8 million in TV ads, compared to about $2.2 million for Santorum and a super PAC supporting him.

While that gave Romney an advantage, it wasn't nearly as lopsided as in some of the earlier states.

White House Uses Espionage Act To Pursue Leak Cases

nytimes.com:

In case after case, the Espionage Act has been deployed as a kind of ad hoc Official Secrets Act, which is not a law that has ever found traction in America, a place where the people's right to know is viewed as superseding the government's right to hide its business.

In the most recent case, John Kiriakou, a former C.I.A. officer who became a Democratic staff member on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was charged under the Espionage Act with leaking information to journalists about other C.I.A. officers, some of whom were involved in the agency's interrogation program, which included waterboarding.

For those of you keeping score, none of the individuals who engaged in or authorized the waterboarding of terror suspects have been prosecuted, but Mr. Kiriakou is in federal cross hairs, accused of talking to journalists and news organizations, including The New York Times.

Germans set to deliver advanced sub to Israel

BERLIN ? One of the world?s most advanced German manufactured submarines is
slated to be sent to Israel this year. German media reported last week that the
68-meter Dolphin submarine, the largest post-World War II submarine to be built
in the Federal Republic, was openly placed in the harbor of the northern city of
Kiel.

The Dolphin submarines are mainly constructed in Kiel, located in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein on the border of Denmark. According to the daily Kieler Nachrichten, the submarine can now be viewed on the harbor compound operated by Howaldtswerke- Deutsche Werft. The highly sophisticated submarine, which is believed to contain secondstrike nuclear weapons capability, is the first of three advanced ?Super Dolphin? vessels to be delivered to Israel?s navy. ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, the giant German engineering firm, owns the ship manufacturer subsidiary in Kiel.

The Kieler Nachrichten reported that a heavy police presence is guarding the Super Dolphin. Water-based boat patrols, including the police boat Vossbrook, are frequently circling the submarine.

The new Dolphin is a second- generation advanced underwater vessel. Germany?s government has previously furnished Israel with three earlier models of the Dolphin. A fifth Dolphin is slated to be delivered in 2013.

In view of the growing jingoism coming from Iran?s supreme leader, who recently declared that the ?cancerous tumor? of Israel has to be cut away, the timing of the Super Dolphin?s delivery raises new questions about Israel?s strategy to confront Iran?s threats. German media noted that a spokesman from ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems declined to comment on the Super Dolphin.

Germany and Israel have agreed to the delivery of a third Super Dolphin. The Federal Republic will subsidize the sale of the third vessel with a maximum of 135 million euros.

The delivery of the Super Dolphin to Israel is filled with some irony, largely because Iran?s regime as of 2010 maintains a 4.5 percent stock control of ThyssenKrupp. According to ThyssenKrupp?s 2011- 2012 corporate report in connection with Iran sanctions, ?the executive board of ThyssenKrupp AG ordered a review of the business activities with Iranian customers in existence before the tighter trade restrictions came into effect to establish whether they comply with the new laws. In September 2010, it was decided that ThyssenKrupp will not enter into any new transactions with Iranian customers.?

ThyssenKrupp, which was involved in German efforts in World War II and used slave labor to advance Nazi Germany?s military aims, has refused to evict its Iranian government stockholders from its corporate ownership. Anti-Iranian regime critics have slammed the massive steel and engineering giant over the last few years for failing completely to slash its ties with the Islamic Republic.

Court upholds Fifth Amendment, prevents forced decryption of data

When our forefathers were amending the constitution for the fifth time, they probably didn't have TrueCrypt-locked hard drives in mind. However, a ruling from the 11th Circuit Appeals Court has upheld the right of an anonymous testifier to not forcibly decrypt their data. The case relates to a Jon Doe giving evidence in exchange for immunity. The protection afforded to them under this case wouldn't extend to any other incriminating data that might be found, and as such Doe felt this could lead to violation of the fifth amendment. The validity of the prosecution's demands for the data decryption lies in what they already know, and how they knew it -- to prevent acting on hopeful hunches. The prosecutors were unable to demonstrate any knowledge of the data in question, leading the 11th Circuit to deem the request unlawful, adding that the immunity should have extended beyond just the current case. This isn't the first time we've seen this part of the constitution under the digital spotlight, and we're betting it won't be the last, either.

Penney reports 4Q loss dragged down by charges

Penney Co. said Friday, Feb. 24, 2012, it posted a loss in the fourth-quarter as results were dragged down by restructuring and management transition charges as well as the financial impact related to its new pricing strategy. (AP/Photo/The Arizona Republic, Tom Tingle, File) MARICOPA COUNTY, NO SALES

(AP) ? J.C. Penney Co. reported a loss of $87 million in the fourth-quarter, citing restructuring and management transition charges as well as the financial impact of preparing for its new pricing strategy.

"While 2011 was a year of transition at J.C. Penney, 2012 will be a year of transformation," CEO Ron Johnson, a former Apple executive, said in a statement. He joined the board last August and became CEO in November.

But he has moved quickly to shake up a company that has been a laggard in the department store sector. It is transforming everything from its simplified pricing approach to what it keeps in stock.

With its new pricing plan that debuted shortly after the end of the fourth quarter, the company is embracing a three-tier strategy: everyday prices that are about 40 percent less than initial prices of a year ago, deeper promotions that last a month and clearance events the first and third Friday of each month.

The company also is changing its assortment of brands and the store experience. It announced in December that it will develop mini-shops in its stores with homemaking doyenne Martha Stewart. During an investor meeting in mid-February, it also outlined plans to add 80 to 100 other brand shops inside its stores to replace the sea of clothing racks typical of department stores. It also plans spots in its stores called Town Squares, like Apple's Genius Bars, that will offer services and advice. Investors will want to know what other brands Penney hopes to add.

The department store chain said Friday that its loss amounted to 41 cents per share for the three-month period ended Jan. 28. That compares with net income of $271 million, or $1.13 per share in the year-ago period.

The results include restructuring and management charges that totaled 56 cents per share. The impact of its pricing strategy, which debuted Feb. 1, lowered results by an additional 59 cents. Excluding those charges, the company earned 74 cents per share, which beat estimates for a profit of 68 cents per share, according to FactSet.

Revenue slipped 5 percent to $5.42 billion, reflecting the company's exit from its catalog business. Analysts expected $5.5 billion.

Its revenue at stores open at least a year fell 1.8 percent for the quarter.

Its shares fell 65 cents, or 1.6 percent, to $41.28 in premarket trading.

Penney faces a challenge in selling shoppers on its new pricing. For years, it followed the common retail practice of hiking its initial prices so shoppers feel like they're getting a great deal when items go on sale. Penney threw 590 sales events last year, and nearly three-quarters of its revenue came from merchandise discounted by half or more. In fact, this past holiday season, Penney was forced to heavily discount to get shoppers in. That helped to depress gross profit margins to 30.2 percent in the fourth-quarter, down from 37.6 percent in the year ago period.

The turnaround plan took a hit when Fitch Ratings dropped its rating this week on Penney's debt to the "speculative" range, better known as "junk." Fitch said it's not sure that shoppers will accept the pricing structure or that the company can lift sliding sales and improve profitability.

Penney has been a laggard among department stores as its core middle-income customers have been among those hit hardest by the weak economy. It's also failed to attract younger customers even adding hip brands like Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's teen clothing collection Olsenboye.

Johnson has tapped former colleagues at Apple and Target to join Penney, including former Target marketing executive Michael Francis as Penney's president.

(AP) ? Government troops shelled rebel-held areas in central Syria on Friday, killing at least four people, activists said, as the United States, Europe and Arab nations met in Tunisia to seek ways to ease the crisis.

More than 70 countries will participate in Friday's "Friends of Syria" meeting, which is expected to press Syrian President Bashar Assad to agree to a cease-fire and allow for humanitarian aid to reach the areas that have been hardest-hit by his security forces.

In the run up to the conference, American, European and Arab officials said the group would likely impose harsher sanctions if Assad rejects the cease-fire and predicted that his opponents would grow stronger if he remained in power.

And in an effort to bring an end to the violence, the U.N. announced that former Secretary General Kofi Annan will be the joint U.N.-Arab League envoy to deal with the crisis.

In a statement, Annan said Friday he would try to "help bring an end to the violence and human rights abuses, and promote a peaceful solution" in Syria. He expressed hope the Syrian government and opposition groups will cooperate with him in his efforts.

The Tunisia meeting is the latest international effort to end the crisis, which began when protesters, inspired by the Arab Spring uprisings elsewhere, took the streets in some of Syrian impoverished provinces nearly a year ago to call for political change.

Since then, Assad's security forces have violently repressed the uprising, blaming it on Islamic extremists and armed gangs, while members of the originally peaceful opposition have taken up arms.

The U.N. estimated in January that 5,400 people had been killed in the conflict in 2011. Hundreds more have died since. Syrian activists say the death toll is more than 7,300. Overall figures cannot be independently confirmed because Syria has prevented most media from operating inside the country.

Also Friday, U.N.-appointed investigators in Geneva said they had complied a list of Syrian officials accused of crimes against humanity in the crackdown. The list reaches as high as Assad.

Russia and China have long opposed foreign intervention in Syria.

Alexei Pushkov, a Russian lawmaker, said Friday after meeting Assad recently that the Syrian president sounded confident and demonstrated no sign he would he step aside. Pushkov warned that arming the Syrian opposition would fuel civil war.

"Assad doesn't look like a person ready to leave, because, among other things, there is no reason for him to do that as he is being supported by broad layers of the population," Pushkov said, according to the RIA-Novosti news agency.

Four people died Friday in the renewed shelling of the Baba Amr neighborhood of Homs, activists said, the latest of hundreds killed there in recent weeks. The neighborhood, under siege and intense shelling for three weeks, has become the center of the revolt.

The British-based Observatory for Human Rights said troops were also attempting to storm Rastan, a besieged rebel-held town just north of Homs. He said the town was being shelled and reported heavy clashes between troops and army defectors who destroyed two armored personnel carriers.

Amateur videos posted on the Internet by activists showed black smoke rising from residential areas of Baba Amr and debris littering its slum-like apartment blocks.

Parts of Homs, Syria's third-largest city, have been under a fierce government attack for nearly three weeks.

Jason Campbell denies ditching bride at altar

Chaos in the Dominican Republic at this hour, as Oakland Raiders quarterback Jason Campbell is denying rumors that he left his longtime girlfriend at the altar on Saturday. What we know is that there was supposed to be a wedding between Campbell and fianc?e Jenny Montes at a swanky Dominican resort on Saturday, but it was called off ? the Washington Post says ?just hours? before the scheduled ceremony. Campbell is saying that?s not true, that it was postponed way before that. But then there?s the 162 guests who arrived expecting a wedding, only to be told it was off.

In phone conversations with the Washington Post Tuesday, Campbell declined to go into details but said the two came to a decision to ?put things off? after discussing it for a couple of weeks. ?I love her enough not to leave her at the altar,? he said. ?I love her enough to talk to her before it gets that far.?

Campbell, who said he was still in the Dominican Republic with Montes and her family, denied Internet rumors that he had called off the wedding at the last minute.

But the Post also wrote:

The 162 guests ? who flew to an exclusive Dominican Republican resort for the celebration ? were informed at a welcoming party that the marriage was off, but did not receive any explanation why.

Campbell was the Raiders? starting QB last season until breaking his collarbone in October, and was eventually replaced by Carson Palmer. Campbell?s contract with the Raiders expires next month, when he will become an unrestricted free agent.

The couple had a wedding web site, which has been taken down. Photos of them together here.

Robert Littal of Black Sports Online:

Do I believe Campbell?

No.

Jenny has his initials tattooed on his back, so I doubt she was happy about pulling the plug on the wedding, but Campbell has made his statement and I respect him at least acknowledging the rumors.

How many former waitresses do you know who get engaged to a NFL Player and plan a lavish wedding in the Dominican Republic make a mutual decision to call off the wedding last minute?

Positive economic outlook set to boost tourism and real estate on ...

The economy in Cape Verde is expected to rise 7.1% by 2013 from 5.6% in 2011, according to the International Monetary Fund which experts believe will foster growth in the real estate sector.

In addition a $66.2 million aid grant from the United States to reform water, sanitation and land management is expected to increase growth even further as infrastructure improves.

?Cape Verde is a nation on a rapid up.? It has halved its 1990 poverty level and in 2008 officially graduated from Least Developed to Middle Income Country status.? Much of this positivity stems from one of the fastest growing tourism industries in the world and active encouragement of substantial foreign investment,? said Adam Cornwell, managing director of Feltrim International which promotes real estate on the islands.

He explained that as the country has scant natural resources and little rainfall, the aid flows have been needed to make the necessary improvements to cope with the influx of tourists. The five year agreement with the US Millennium Challenge Corporation announced this week will focus on specific projects to help Cape Verde sustain its growing tourism industry.

Some $41.1 million will help make Cape Verde?s national regularity institutions financially sound and transparent and transform utilities into high performing commercial organisations. The islands? households and businesses will benefit from better quality water and sanitation services.

Then $17.3 million will be used to refine Cape Verde?s legal and institutional environment to make it more attractive for large and small investors. Land information will become more reliable, land rights strengthened and land transactions made more efficient.

Experts believe that real estate development and tourism will increase as a direct result and around 13,000 jobs will be created.

According to the latest official statistics, tourist arrivals continue growing at a rate of 20% per annum with 219,000 arriving in the first half of 2011, an increase of 27.5% against the same period in 2010. It is projected that Cape Verde will reach half a million tourists annually by 2015 and one million by 2020.

The number of hotel beds is also increasing year on year. Spanish chain Riu has five hotels across the islands four of which are five star and rival Spanish company Melia opened its five star hotel on the island of Sal in 2011. Cape Verde ranked third on Skyscanner?s list of emerging destinations in 2011 proving there is now a strong winter sun rival to the Canaries in the mid haul market from the UK.

New on the island of Boa Vista is the 1,140 unit Santa M?nica Beach Resort and Spa which combines a five star hotel with luxury one and two bedroom apartments and two to five bedroom villas each with private pools. The beachfront resort has a range of gourmet seafood, oriental and fine dining restaurants, childcare services and a range of leisure pursuits from on site tennis coaching to mountain biking, big game fishing, diving, windsurfing, sailing and 4?4 safaris in the local vicinity.? A championship standard golf course is planned.

The beach at Santa M?nica is well known as one of the world?s key turtle nesting sites as well as being a breeding ground for humpback whales and home to many native and migrating bird species. Boa Vista itself is renowned for its world leading beaches and much is protected by law as natural park thus preventing overbuilding.

Hotel occupancy, according to the government, is currently 90% and there is no low season due to average daily temperatures consistently hovering between 21?C and 30?C which is warmer and more reliable than even the Canary Islands.

Boa Vista?s International Airport now takes direct five and a half hour flights from Glasgow, Gatwick and Manchester and flights from Bristol and Stansted are to be added giving UK visitors greater flexibility. Direct flights to Cape Verde are also in place from Lisbon, Madrid, Milan, Frankfurt, Brussels, and Boston. Passenger traffic across the islands? seven airports rose 11.2% year on year in 2011, from 1.6 million to 1.78 million.

For a limited time there are early investor discounts of 30% for cash buyers with prices starting from ?83,300 for a one bedroom apartment and ?325,500 for a detached three bedroom villa.

Finance options of up to 90% are available making ownership of a one bedroom apartment achievable with a ?11,900 deposit. There are also rental and leaseback plans offering up to 7% fixed income with allowances for personal use.

Property at the resort also qualifies for SSAS and SIPP purchase via fully managed hotel suites from ?85,000 with 10 year guaranteed 7% rental income. Licenses and planning permission have been granted and construction is underway on site with phase one scheduled for completion in the middle of 2013.

The State of Black Sci-Fi 2012: My Tribute to Afrofuturist Betye Saar ...

Curiosity
about the unknown
has no boundaries.
Symbols, images, place and cultures merge.

Time slips away.
The stars, the cards, the mystic vigil
may hold the answers.
By shifting the point of view

an inner spirit is released.
Free to create.
? Betye Saar

My introduction to artist Betye Saar came about in an unexpected way. Three or four years ago, my mother and I took a weekend road trip to San Francisco for Thanksgiving, and we stopped by the Museum of the African Diaspora on a sightseeing tour. After checking out several exhibits, we rushed through the museum?s gift store, which was about to close for the night. In my haste, I picked up a boxed set of greeting cards entitled ?Memories,? intending to present it to someone as a Christmas gift. Months would pass before I looked at those cards again and learned more about the artist, Betye Saar.

"Black Girl's Window" by Betye Saar

Ms. Saar can be considered an Afrofuturist, much like Jean-Michel Basquiat, fusing elements of fantasy, science fiction, social justice and Afrocentricity in her artwork. Her medium is found objects, or assemblage. She collects photographs, wood, fiberglass and amulets, adds a healthy dose of righteous rage, and becomes a modern-day conjure woman.

?I am intrigued with combining the remnant of memories, fragments of relics and ordinary objects, with the components of technology,? says Ms. Saar, who peruses swap meets, antique shows and thrift shops for some of her finds. ?It?s a way of delving into the past and reaching into the future simultaneously. The art itself becomes the bridge.?

This dream-like bridge between the past and future intrigued me enough to keep Saar?s ?Memories? boxed set for myself. One of the pieces that speaks to my spirit is entitled ?Black Girl?s Window.? A mixed-media assemblage, the work features the silhouette of a black woman with a short natural pressing her hands and face against the window of a wood frame. Reflected above her head in the panels are prints of the moon, stars, a skeleton, a human brain and children embracing. The piece is inspiring because it reminds me of the boundless imagination we possess as black women ? we are creators, dreamers, soothsayers, thinkers ? but we are limited by a society that seeks to erase our complexity through reductive, disempowering images.

While researching Ms. Saar?s life, I was thrilled to learn that she is an Angeleno, as am I, and still lives in the city. Her introduction to the beauty of found objects came about while visiting her grandmother in Watts. As a girl, she watched sculptor Simon Rodia piecing together what would later become the Watts Towers, a monument consisting of steel, mortar, sea shells, broken glass and tiles. Watching the Italian immigrant mining beauty from the rubble helped to inform her own aesthetic, reclaiming negative images of African-Americans and transforming them into something powerful and divine.

"The Liberation of Aunt Jemima" by Betye Saar

Ms. Saar visited Nigeria, Haiti and Mexico during the 1970s, incorporating elements of mysticism with altars, bones, snakes and ritual objects, which she regarded as her ancestral works. Among the many themes present in her art are identity, womanism, spirituality and black liberation. Ms. Saar was involved in the Black Arts Movement, and she began collecting images of Uncle Tom, Sambo and other derogatory folk figures to deconstruct them and strip them of their power.?Her first protest piece, ?The Liberation of Aunt Jemima,? was exhibited in 1972. In this signature work, a smiling, big-busted, handkerchief-headed domestic is situated inside a wooden box. She wields a broom in one hand and a rifle in the other. The box also contains the print of a large black woman holding a white baby juxtaposed with a black power fist. The bold contrast of caricature and weaponry ? the militarization of mammy ? both amuses and disturbs the viewer. Reinterpreting the degrading image of Aunt Jemima as a warrior sister crushes America?s love affair with servile black women while simultaneously flaunting our agency through self-awareness and violence, if need be. Although the piece debuted forty years ago, Ms. Saar was particularly prescient, especially in light of movies such as The Help, a nostalgic tribute to mammy which flirts with the memory of our shackled selves.

I might never have discovered this sister visionary had I given away my boxed set of cards a few years ago. Or maybe I would have. Truth has a way of calling out to us, beckoning us when we least expect it. Betye Saar?s work was recently featured in Now Dig This! Art and Black Los Angeles 1960?1980, a Hammer Museum exhibit curated by Amiri Baraka?s daughter Dr. Kellie Jones. I remember walking through the installation, taking in life-sized pieces such as ?Indigo Mercy? and ?Black Girl?s Window,? feeling as if I had stumbled upon an artifact at once familiar and bizarre.

Saar?s art informs my own work as a writer of speculative fiction in that she recycles emblems of pain, loss and exploitation to craft a futuristic portrait of black womanhood that is surreal, darkly comedic and sacred. I love the idea of excavating found objects in my own writing, digging away until I have uncovered the stone, the wood, the broken glass that has the ability to cut as well as transform.

The Transparency Grenade captures clandestine communications ...

If an opaque regime retains rule by restraining knowledge, then the truth's an explosive risk: so there's no better place to welcome a wiretap than in the translucent form of a Soviet F1 hand grenade. Artist Julian Oliver's "Transparency Grenade" is a device that uses a small computer, microphone, and wireless antenna to lift nearby network traffic and audio and stream it to the outside world. The device is designed to dig for e-mail excerpts, websites, images, and nearby voices, and then dispense that data with a location to a public website. The creators say that it's an "iconic cure" for a "lack of corporate and governmental transparency."

The grenade is made of a translucent resin, contains hand-crafted sterling silver parts, and has a functioning trigger mechanism. It runs a modified Angstrom (Linux-based) OS atop an ARM Cortex A8 chip, an Arduino Nano, an LED bargraph, an 802.11 antenna, a 3.7-volt battery, 64 x 32 RGB display, a 5mm cardioid microphone, and an 8GB MicroSD card. For those who don't have the materials or know-how to put that together, the creators say that an Android app that mimics some of the grenade's functionality is forthcoming for rooted phones.

If you're in Berlin through February 20th, you can check out the Transparency Grenade in the Weise7 Studio exhibition at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt ? just don't plan for a private parley in its presence.
