Fisker Automotive Recalls Karma Over Battery Issue | EarthTechling

Green car manufacturer Fisker Automotive has had its share of challenges on the way to introducing the Karma to the American market, including criticism and delays in delivery. Now, in light of a recent problem from its battery supplier, a recall is thrown into the mix.
Fisker?s battery supplier for the Karma, A123, recently said that it found a potential safety issue in which the hose clamps that are part of the battery?s internal cooling system were misaligned, being positioned in such a way that it could potentially cause a coolant leak that could cause an electrical short circuit. Initially it was said only 50 or so vehicles were impacted by this, but now, in a recall filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, that number has jumped to 239 models (less than 40 are ?believed to have been delivered to consumers? though, with the remaining still in dealer inventory).

Fisker said in this filing that certain model 2012 Karmas manufactured from July 1 through November 3 of this year are impacted by the issue which, if a short occurs, could potentially start a fire. The auto manufacturer noted it plans to notify owners that its dealers will replace the high-voltage battery at no cost to the owner, and that the safety recall is expected to commence in January 2012.
The over $100,000 luxury green car from Fisker is certainly not the first of its kind this year to have this type of high profile safety issue. GM?s Chevy Volt, for example, is being looked at for potential fire issues related to its battery packs that could occur a short time after an accident in the vehicle happens. Nissan, for its part, says its growing in popularity Leaf electric vehicle?s batteries were ?tsunami tested? and quite safe.

Did Blackhawk Technical College fail students?
Three times in recent weeks, Blackhawk Technical College has called evacuations because of gas problems. At least one student tells us she suffered related health problems and reported gas smells and concerns repeatedly before the second evacuation.

Dos Santos doesn?t wanna revenge Minotauro Nogueira

The Brazilian Junior ?Cigano? dos Santos this Tuesday, November 27th, on an event promoted by the UFC with children with cancer held by ?It Ain?t Chemo? association. The event is part of ?UFC Community Program? and it happened at TUF?s gym, in Las Vegas. Besides Cigano, there were on the event names like Roy Nelson, Dominick Cruz, Travis Browne and Frank Mir. It was the first time Dos Santos stared at Mir after the bout on which the American broke Rodrigo Nogueira?s arm, a friend of the Brazilian, at UFC 140.
When asked about how he felt to share the same room with Mir, Junior stated: ?I didn?t even talk to him. I said hi to Mir because he said to me before?, said the Brazilian, who also claimed not to be upset about the outcome of the fight between the American and Nogueira. ?I just think it was a complicated fight for all Brazilians, mainly for us at Team Nogueira. He (Rodrigo) had the win in his hands and with Frank Mir knocked out in front of him, and, for some reason, he didn?t keep punching him, he tried to fit a guillotine choke and Frank Mir was lucky enough to grab his arm, and grabbed the chance when he had one?, said Junior.
?The problem was that he broke Rodriogo?s arm, and he has just recovered, and now he?ll stay some time off. But we know it already, I know what it?ll be the result of it: Rodrigo will comeback and bring much joy to all of us?, completed.
Junior dos Santos also stated he doesn?t want to revenge his friend?s loss. ?I don?t need to revenge him. I guess there?s no such thing, I guess he (Rodrigo) can do it himself. But I confess I have never picked out opponents and I won?t, but if someday I fight Frank Mir, absolutely it?d be an interesting fight?, affirmed.
Dos Santos might train again in 10 days
On a visit to Las Vegas to watch UFC 141, which main event will define Junior dos Santos?s next opponent, the Brazilian athlete takes some time off. The athlete remains in the city until January 3rd. ?I want to go shopping, spend some time with my wife. I know I?ll have a good start in 2012, but I can?t wait to train again?, stated the fighter, who also explained that his recovering after the knee surgery is going better than expected.
?It?s great. There?re 17 days I?ve gone through the surgery and I?m feeling fine. I just got to regain confidence and train again, but in 10 days I?ll be training normally?, completed.
As for Brock Lesnar VS. Alistair Overeem, a bout that will define his next opponent, the Brazilian said he believes it?ll be tied. ?It?s a tough fight for the both of them. I?m saying it?ll be 50-50, but Brock has more chances on the beginning of the fight because he?s more explosive and goes for it?, analyzed the champion.

Chinese banks under pressure to raise cash next year: source (Reuters)
SHANGHAI (Reuters) ? China's listed banks are expected to raise over 100 billion yuan ($15.78 billion) through equity financing next year as they face pressure to replenish capital due to rapid loan growth and tighter regulation, the China Securities Journal reported on Tuesday.
Citing analysts, the official paper said banks facing such pressure included Agricultural Bank of China (601288.SS) (1288.HK), Industrial Bank Co Ltd (601166.SS) and Bank of Communications (601328.SS) (3328.HK).
Banks are also expected tap the debt market for funding, it said.
The bulk of the expected equity financing would be funded by government shareholders, the paper said. Listed banks raised more than 270 billion yuan via equity financing in 2010 and nearly 290 billion yuan worth of debt this year, according to the article.
Chinese banks will be under fundraising pressure because new lending next year is expected to exceed 8 trillion yuan -- a level necessary to support economic expansion -- potentially weakening lenders' balance sheets, the newspaper said.
Major Chinese banks, or systematically important ones, would be required to have minimum capital adequacy ratio (CAR) of 11.5 percent, while smaller banks must have at least 10.5 percent, according to rules published by the banking regulator in August.
However it is still unclear when they will be implemented.
China International Capital Corp estimates banks' assets to expand by around 14 percent next year and that would reduce the average CAR of listed domestic banks to around 10.7 percent, meaning some lenders would be under pressure to raise money, the paper said.

Will California Lose Race for World's Largest Solar Plant as Solar Millennium Declares Bankruptcy?

Solar Millennium, the company that built Europe's first parabolic trough power plants, and which was involved also in the ginormous Sahara solar project, known as Desertec, has declared bankruptcy. Solar Millennium was also developing the Blythe Solar Power Project in the Mojave Desert in California, in a race with South Africa to become the first solar power plant with more than 1 Gigawatt product capacity.
Investors are devastated and partners are scrambling to assess the impacts of the failure of Solar Millennium. The insolvency administrator's first task will be determining if Solar Millennium can continue business operations as the proceedings continue.
Solar Millennium's parabolic solar power plants rely on solar thermal energy, using large arrays of curved mirrors to collect the sun's warmth, which produces steam to drive a generator. The so-called Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plant can continue to generate power after sunset, using the collected heat. But as prices continue to drop for photovoltaic technology, concentrated solar thermal power is falling out of favor. Additionally, industry insiders bemoan the fact that as soon as the research and development reaches a point where a technology is ready for the mass market, copycats begin their work -- soon flooding the market with similar technology produced at lower costs.
Solar Millenium has already stopped operations in America, where investors have announced their intention to change the Blythe Solar Power Project from CSP to photovoltaic technology (pdf), inducing the US Department of the Interior to suspend permission for construction activities until the anticipated use of a right of way grant has been re-established. This delay will most likely cause the US to lose the race for the first operational solar power plant exceeding 1 Gw capacity.
Hope remains for the Desertec Saharan solar power plant that Matt McDermott dubbed ginormous: Germany's Die Welt newspaper notes that Siemens still believes in the CSP technology, and that all efforts will be made to ensure that projects already started by Solar Millennium will be brought to completion.

Obama campaign seeks to raise $60 mln in 4th quarter (Reuters)
CHICAGO (Reuters) ? President Barack Obama's campaign set a goal of raising $60 million in the fourth quarter of the year to benefit the Democratic incumbent's re-election and the Democratic National Committee, a campaign official said on Saturday.
Obama's campaign, together with the Democratic National Committee, had raised roughly $155 million through the end of September.
If it reaches its goal for the fourth quarter, the campaign will surpass $200 million in fundraising for 2011.
Obama is not expected to attend fundraising events between now and the end of the year, the campaign official said. He headlined about 15 campaign fundraising events in the fourth quarter.
"Enthusiasm for the White House's policies has been steadily increasing and it will keep increasing," said Steven Cohen, a major contributor and campaign fundraiser based in Chicago.
Cohen pointed to Obama's push for an extension of a payroll tax cut while House of Representatives Republicans stonewalled, describing this as a policy that has helped middle-class voters contrast the president with his Republican challengers.
"Among the people who I have talked to . they are seeing a real demonstration of the president's commitment to stand his ground," Cohen said.
Overall, the campaign seeks to raise more than $750 million to boost Obama's bid for a second term in the White House.
The campaign on December 20 launched a joint fundraising committee to benefit the Democratic Party in 11 all-important "swing states," - such as Florida, Colorado, Michigan, Pennsylvania - where voting is expected to be close next year, and costs are expected to be high.
The campaign brought in $70 million in the third quarter, topping its $55 million goal. But fundraisers said they were stifled by the protracted congressional debt talks this summer, which led Obama to cancel top-dollar fundraisers around the country.
The campaign, which formally started in April, raised $86 million in the second quarter.
The 2012 election is due to be the priciest ever with Obama expected to raise more than his record $750 million from 2008. And newly relaxed fundraising laws will add hundreds of millions of dollars from "super political action committees," officially deemed separate from campaigns, even when devoted to electing particular candidates.
