China & BYD Launch Largest Battery Energy Storage Station in World

?

China, going big in another cleantech category? Who would?ve guessed it?

BYD, a large Chinese manufacturer of automobiles and rechargeable batteries, has teamed up with?the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) and constructed what they think is?the world?s largest battery energy storage station.

?This large utility-scale project, located in Zhangbei, Hebei Province, combines 140 Mega-Watts of renewable energy generation (both wind & solar), 36 Mega-Watt-Hours (MWh) of energy storage and a smart power transmission system,? the news release notes.

?BYD?s battery energy storage system provides a solution for the realization of energy storage in the smart grid that improves renewable energy efficiency by 5%-10%.?

BYD provided ?energy storage batteries in arrays larger than a football field? for the project and state that the entire project is?worth over $500 million USD.

?This State Grid project demonstrates a solution and will be the model of development for China?s new energy resources,??Xiu Binglin, Deputy Director of the National Energy Administration, said.

I think we?ll see more and more news of large energy storage projects like this in 2012 and wonder if this one will even hold the title (largest battery energy storage station) for long.

Of course, other than energy storage, a good mixture of different energy options and smart grid technologies (and proper use of them) can help us to put a lot more renewable energy on the grid without any service reliability problems (and can even increase energy security). In fact, two utility company CEOs (from Florida and Texas) focused on the importance of those solutions rather than energy storage in a roundtable discussion at the Solar Power International conference in Dallas last October. They also mentioned the help the roll-out of electric vehicles, which can, naturally, act as storage mechanisms, would provide.?Nonetheless, suffice it to say, energy storage projects like this one in China will play a role as well.

Vizio flashes a sleek new HDTV design in Rose Bowl ad, we'll see more at CES (video)

For the second year in a row, it looks like Vizio has taken advantage of its sponsorship of the Rose Bowl to tease a new product -- last year it was an Android tablet, and the 2012 game brought this new display design. It flashes around :25 into the ad (embedded after the break), and while there's no details on exactly what it might be, we know Vizio had plenty of Google TV tech to show off last year, and after a year of development plus the release of Google TV 2.0, it may have decided to match Sony's funky TV setup with an interesting stand of its own. Whether there's Android, OLED or any other new tech to be found in the flat-panel we'll surely find out more in just a few days once CES 2012 gets underway.

Legal Theory Blog: Legal Theory Bookworm

The Legal Theory Bookworm recommends The Ends of Harm: The Moral Foundations of Criminal Law by Victor Tadros. Here is a description:
Every modern democratic state imprisons thousands of offenders every year, depriving them of their liberty, causing them a great deal of psychological and sometimes physical harm. Relationships are destroyed, jobs are lost, the risk of the offender being harmed by other offenders is increased and all at great expense to the state.

How can this brutal and costly enterprise be justified? Traditionally, philosophers answering this question have argued either that the punishment of wrongdoers is a good in itself (retributivism), or that it is a regrettable means to a valuable end, such as the deterrence of future wrongdoing, and thus justifiable on consequentialist grounds. This book offers a critical examination of those theories and advances a new argument for punishment's justification, calling it the 'duty view'. On this view, the permission to punish offenders is grounded in the duties that they incur in virtue of their wrongdoing. The most important duties that ground the justification of punishment are the duty to recognize that the offender has done wrong and the duty to protect others against wrongdoing. In the light of these duties the state has a permission to punish offenders to ensure that they recognize that what they have done is wrong, but also to protect others from crime.

In contrast to other justifications of punishment grounded in deterrence, the duty view is developed in the light of a non-consequentialist moral theory: a theory which endorses constraints on the pursuit of the good. It is shown that it is normally wrong to harm a person as a means to pursue a greater good. However, there are exceptions to this principle in cases where the person harmed has an enforceable duty to pursue the good. The implications of this idea are explored both in the context of self-defence, and then in the context of punishment. Through the systematic exploration of the relationship between self-defence and punishment, the book makes significant progress in defending a plausible set of non-consequentialist moral principles that justify the punishment of wrongdoers, and marks a significant contribution to the philosophical literature on punishment.

Video analysis: Iole and Meltzer question Lesnar?s strategy at UFC 141

Brock Lesnar chose to slug it out with Alistair Overeem at UFC 141. He lost and then walked away from the sport.

It was a shocking approach to take against one of the more accomplished strikers in the division, especially knowing Lesnar's strength is the takedown game.

Yahoo! Sports' experts Kevin Iole and Dave Meltzer spoke about Lesnar's gameplan and why it unfolded the way it did.
