Coverage Details Of Rental Car Firms Insurance | Mike Horn Blog

Anytime an person rents a automobile from a rental automobile business, they will be asked if they would like to add the companys rental car insurance coverage to the contract for renting the car. Realizing that, it is always excellent to acknowledge what are our options. This rental vehicle insurance coverage is created to guard the individual renting the auto and the firm renting out the auto if anything must come about to the automobile even though it is in the renters possession. Numerous men and women are not constantly confident of whether or not the price of the rental car insurance is worth the coverage made available and some believe that their current vehicle insurance coverage coverage or the rental automobile insurance coverage coverage made available by many credit card firms is sufficient to guard the person from liability if something happens to the rental vehicle even though in their possession. For some individuals, the rental vehicle insurance offered by the rental auto company is their most appropriate solution for coverage.

There are many diverse sorts of rental auto insurance coverage that are included in the rental car insurance coverage offered by the rental vehicle organizations. The first sort of coverage is the damage waiver, which might include a collision damage waiver, a loss damage waiver, and a physical harm waiver. Each of these waivers waives the right of the insurance organization to collect further money from the individual who has rented the auto in the occasion that the car is damaged while in their possession. The collision harm waiver protects the renter in the occasion that the rented vehicle is in an accident with another automobile. The loss damage waiver protects the person in the case of the auto or parts of the vehicle getting stolen while the automobile is in the renters possession. The physical harm wavier protects the person from liability if the rented car is physically damaged from sources other than a collision, such as skidding off of the road, bad climate conditions and hitting a tree or hit by a blown truck tire. homeowners association

One more valuable type of vehicle insurance coverage coverage supplied by the rental vehicle company is individual liability coverage. This type of car insurance coverage protects the person in the event that they trigger harm to yet another individual, car, or piece of home even though operating the vehicle rented from the vehicle insurance coverage organization. Personal accident insurance coverage coverage made available by the organization will offer a one time payment in the occasion that you or a passenger in your rental auto is injured, maimed, or killed in a auto accident involving the rental vehicle. The final kind of insurance coverage coverage typically made available by the rental vehicle insurance company is individual house insurance. This will pay to replace any individual home that is lost or stolen from the rental vehicle while it is in the renters possession. Each and every of these varieties of rental vehicle insurance coverage has very distinct limitations, so it usually the greatest to read the situations really carefully when signing and acquiring insurance from the rental car firm.

Obama denounces Benghazi cover-up charges as ?political circus?

President Barack Obama during a joint news conference with British Prime Minister David Cameron on Monday. (J.??

President Barack Obama on Monday furiously dismissed as a "political circus" Republican charges that his administration had misled the public about the Sept. 12, 2012, attack on the U.S. compound in Benghazi, Libya. Obama said the accusations of a cover-up dishonor the memory of the four Americans killed in the onslaught.

"There?s no there there,? Obama insisted during a joint question-and-answer session with British Prime Minister David Cameron at the White House. "And the fact that this keeps on getting churned out, frankly, has a lot to do with political motivations."

The president?s angry words came after news reports surfaced Friday that the White House had overseen a process that repeatedly watered down administration talking points on the attack, removing references to possible involvement by al-Qaida and to prior warnings about threats in Benghazi. Republicans have charged that the White House was worried about the potential political fallout from the spectacular terrorist attack during Obama's re-election campaign. The White House has repeatedly denied that it deliberately misled the public.

"The whole issue of talking points, frankly, throughout this process has been a sideshow," Obama said.

The talking points, which portrayed the attack as evolving from a demonstration of anger at an Internet video that mocked Islam, "pretty much matched the assessments that I was receiving at that time in my presidential daily briefing," he added, referring to his top-secret morning intelligence review with the CIA.

While protests against the video in Egypt led to an assault on the American embassy in Cairo, officials in Libya never reported a demonstration outside the compound in Benghazi before the assault that claimed the lives of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

Obama aides have said that the decision to scrub references in the talking points to al-Qaida and another extremist group, Ansar al-Sharia, reflected the intelligence community's uncertainty about the role they played.

"Immediately after this event happened, we were not clear who exactly had carried it out, how it had occurred, what the motivations were," Obama said. "It happened at the same time as we had seen attacks on U.S. embassies in Cairo as a consequence of this film. And nobody understood exactly what was taking place during the course of those first few days."

The president also pointed to his first public remarks on the attack, in the Rose Garden on Sept. 12, 2012, when he lumped the events in Benghazi in with the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist strikes as "acts of terror."

But he and other senior officials declined in subsequent days to label the attack the work of terrorists. And U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice linked the Benghazi assault to the Internet video when she appeared on morning news shows the first Sunday after the attack.

"I?ve just got to say, here?s what we know: Americans died in Benghazi," Obama said. "What we also know is clearly they were not in a position where they were adequately protected.

"The day after it happened, I acknowledged that this was an act of terrorism, and what I pledged to the American people was we would find out what happened, we would make sure that it did not happen again," he added, "and we would make sure that we held accountable those who had perpetrated this terrible crime. And that?s exactly what we?ve been trying to do."

Obama praised the work of envoys like Stevens and diplomats and other personnel serving overseas today, and declared: "We dishonor them when we turn things like this into a political circus."

Obama also said he had ?sent up? the head of the U.S. National Counterterrorism Center, Matt Olsen, to Capitol Hill, where Olsen branded Benghazi a ?terrorist attack? with possible connections to al-Qaida, including a regional offshoot, Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM). At the time, Olsen?s testimony was notable in part because of the top Obama aides? reluctance to brand the Benghazi attack the work of terrorists.

?If this was some effort on our part to try to downplay what had happened, or tamp it down, that would be a pretty odd thing that three days later we end up putting out all the information that in fact has now served as the basis for everybody recognizing that this was a terrorist attack," Obama said. "The whole thing defies logic."

The president also pointed to the State Department-commissioned independent investigation led by retired veteran diplomat Tom Pickering and retired Adm. Mike Mullen, who produced a scathing report on failures to heed requests for more security in Benghazi.

"What they discovered was some pretty harsh judgments in terms of how we had worked to protect consulates and embassies around the world," Obama said.

"Frankly, if anybody out there wants to actually focus on how we make sure something like this does not happen again, I am happy to get their advice and information and counsel," Obama said.

Urban Hounds: Product Review: Bow Tie Collar from Rover ...

I'm super behind in my product review.? The collar I am reviewing today was one of Weasley's presents for his first birthday, March 11!?? A London Bow Tie Collar from Rover Boutique on Etsy.??

Rover dog is a Toronoto based company that specializes in shirts, jackets, dresses and collars from high quality materials.?? Their products have a preppy, vintage aesthetic that I really appreciate. In fact if I one the lottery? one of my first acts would be to buy up the contents of their shop as everything is adorable.

?The company was started when the designer found a lack of classic, attractive pet gear while shopping for her own dog.?? From their Etsy store bio: " The pet fashion market was saturated with frilly, glittery, and impractical garments that had little design value. Most pet clothing found in even high-end boutiques was poorly made with little attention paid to the quality of materials, durability and design. On the other end of the spectrum was the utilitarian clothing sold at outdoor and hunting stores that was certainly rugged, but far from fashionable. AnneMarie soon recognized the need for a happy medium: durable and well-designed clothing for dogs of all sizes and breeds."

I completely agree with AnneMarie I've never been much for the overly frilly dog dresses and glitter t-shirts, it doesn't match how I'd dress myself so I don't want to dress my dogs that way either.? On the other hand I love clothing and want my dogs to have stylish accessories. ? For myself I gravitate towards vintage clothes or vintage reproductions and I love that Rover Dog has a very vintagey feel to its designs.??

I also appreciate that unlike many dog clothing boutiques, they really cater to male dogs, note the plethora of bow ties, and to dogs of all sizes (collars are available from in length from 7" to 27" and widths fo 3/4" or 1 ".? The shop will also custom make any other length or width you need.? Sadly the London print I got for Weasley is no longer in the shop but they have tons of other gorgeous fabrics.?? Below are some more shots of Weasley in his collar.

If you are a children's book nut like me you might recognize the print on the fabric from Miroslav Sasek's classic? This is London. It is one of my favorite picture books and I was so excited to recognize the? art work in the fabric on the collar.

Rover dog has excellent communication skills and good shipping times.? Their price for a bow tie collar is? $40.00? I'd definitely give this product a four paw review and recommend it to any stylish, classic loving pooch (or pet parent).

I should also add that this is my second purchase from The Rover Boutique.?
?Weasley also has an adorable tweed jacket that we love:

Fashion's Betsey Johnson goes to therapy in made-for-TV comeback

By Eric Kelsey

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Mother-daughter therapy, nightly branzino dinners and pulls from a mimosa-filled water bottle at the gym.

Welcome to just some of the life of Betsey Johnson, the eccentric and frenetic fashion designer whose personality goes on display in a reality television series beginning on Sunday on U.S. cable network Style.

"XOX Betsey Johnson" casts an eye on Johnson, 70, best known for her bright, girly punk dresses, and her daughter Lulu as the inseparable duo look to relaunch their fashion careers after professional and personal setbacks.

The eight-episode series is as much a psychological trip through the pair's emotional high-wire act as it is about the nuts and bolts of the fashion industry.

"I think we were always content in our lives, so the joke is 'Why not do a reality TV show when our lives were completely falling apart?'" Lulu, 38, told Reuters in a joint interview with her mother.

For the mother and daughter, who live a few doors apart in the same apartment building on New York's Upper East Side, their lives were ripping at the inseams.

Johnson, who still ends her fashion shows with a trademark cartwheel and split, was forced to shutter her company's 65 retail stores and file for bankruptcy last year while selling off her brand to footwear giant Steve Madden.

"I felt I had lost what I had built and didn't know if I could continue and get it back," said Johnson, who is now the creative director behind her brand.

Meanwhile, Lulu, a divorced mother, is in the midst of launching her own fashion line.

In the first episode, viewers get a taste of a day in the life of the fun-seeking Johnson, whose exercise routine is more flirting with her personal trainer and sipping from her mimosa-filled water bottle than sit-ups and squats.

The designer also never misses her favorite meal: a daily dinner of branzino and a half bottle of white wine.

But Johnson's twitchy anxiety about her new gig takes center stage ahead of a big launch party for her Steve Madden brand.

'LIKE A REALLY BIG THERAPY SESSION'

"I've never had to answer to anyone else," Johnson admits before the party. "I never was controlled. What I'm most afraid of in terms of having people boss me is my pace; I'm very fast."

Never mind that Johnson is a hit at the party in a billowy, embellished gold lam? gown because the series saves its drama for moments away from the boardroom and catwalk, when Johnson and Lulu butt heads as mother and daughter.

"I felt that I really unzipped my soul and kind of squeezed out every bit of who I am, and it was rather painful," Lulu said of the series. "It was like a really big therapy session."

And therapy sessions are what Johnson dislikes the most.

"It's like taking a shovel to cement to try and get this girl to talk about anything emotionally," Lulu said about her mother, even after a steady schedule of couples therapy.

"I don't like to talk about my feelings," Johnson said after one session on the show. "Sometimes Lulu is short with me and it hurts me ... Lulu really loves therapy, I just like to keep going like a race car. Vroom!"

Despite an appearance as playful and Pollyannaish as her designs, the show offers a peek into the dogged work ethic of a successful fashion designer who does not know how to stop.

"My work has driven my life," Johnson said. "I've gone through husbands and boyfriends and I can go through anything as long as I have my work."

In the end, Johnson said she found her therapy in an unexpected place: shooting the series over several months beginning last August.

"The filming was such a great, wonderful support system for me when I had kind of failed at the business," Johnson said. "I think I would have been really miserable if I didn't have the show because it kept me going and it kept me in the spotlight."

Style is part of NBCUniversal, which is owned by Comcast Corp.

Experts: CO2 record illustrates 'scary' trend

In this Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012 photo, a flock of Geese fly past the smokestacks at the Jeffrey Energy Center coal power plant as the suns sets near Emmett, Kan. Worldwide levels of the chief greenhouse gas that causes global warming have hit a milestone, reaching an amount never before encountered by humans, federal scientists said Friday, May 10, 2013. Carbon dioxide was measured at 400 parts per million at the oldest monitoring station in Hawaii which sets the global benchmark. The last time the worldwide carbon level was probably that high was about 2 million years ago, said Pieter Tans of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. (AP Photo/Charlie Riedel)

(AP) ? The old saying that "what goes up must come down" doesn't apply to carbon dioxide pollution in the air, which just hit an unnerving milestone.

The chief greenhouse gas was measured Thursday at 400 parts per million in Hawaii, a monitoring site that sets the world's benchmark. It's a symbolic mark that scientists and environmentalists have been anticipating for years.

While this week's number has garnered all sorts of attention, it is just a daily reading in the month when the chief greenhouse gas peaks in the Northern Hemisphere. It will be lower the rest of the year. This year will probably average around 396 ppm. But not for long ? the trend is going up and at faster and faster rates.

Within a decade the world will never see days ? even in the cleanest of places on days in the fall when greenhouse gases are at their lowest ? when the carbon measurement falls below 400 ppm, said James Butler, director of global monitoring at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Earth Science Research Lab in Boulder, Colo.

"The 400 is a reminder that our emissions are not only continuing, but they're accelerating; that's a scary thing," Butler said Saturday. "We're stuck. We're going to keep going up."

Carbon dioxide stays in the air for a century, some of it into the thousands of years. And the world carbon dioxide pollution levels are accelerating yearly. Every second, the world's smokestacks and cars pump 2.4 million pounds of the heat-trapping gas into the air.

Carbon pollution levels that used to be normal for the 20th century are fast becoming history in the 21st century.

"It means we are essentially passing one in a whole series of points of no return," said Michael Mann, a climate scientist at Pennsylvania State University.

Princeton University climate scientist Michael Oppenheimer said the momentum in carbon dioxide emissions has the world heading toward and passing 450 ppm. That is the level which would essentially mean the world warms another 2 degrees, what scientists think of as dangerous, he said. That 2-degree mark is what much of the world's nations have set as a goal to prevent.

"The direction we've seen is for blowing through the best benchmark for what's dangerous change," Oppenheimer said.

And to see what the future is, scientists look to the past.

The last time the worldwide carbon level probably hit 400 ppm was about 2 million years ago, said Pieter Tans of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

That was during the Pleistocene Era. "It was much warmer than it is today," Tans said. "There were forests in Greenland. Sea level was higher, between 10 and 20 meters (33 to 66 feet)."

Other scientists say it may have been 10 million years ago that Earth last encountered this much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The first modern humans only appeared in Africa about 200,000 years ago.

Environmental activists, such as former Vice President Al Gore, seized on the milestone.

"This number is a reminder that for the last 150 years ? and especially over the last several decades ? we have been recklessly polluting the protective sheath of atmosphere that surrounds the Earth and protects the conditions that have fostered the flourishing of our civilization," Gore said in a statement. "We are altering the composition of our atmosphere at an unprecedented rate."

Carbon dioxide traps heat just like in a greenhouse. It accounts for three-quarters of the planet's heat-trapping gases. There are others, such as methane, which has a shorter life span but traps heat more effectively. Both trigger temperatures to rise over time, scientists say, which is causing sea levels to rise and some weather patterns to change.

When measurements of carbon dioxide were first taken in 1958, it measured 315 ppm. Some scientists and environmental groups promote 350 ppm as a safe level for CO2, but scientists acknowledge they don't really know what levels would stop the effects of global warming.

The level of carbon dioxide in the air is rising faster than in the past decades, despite international efforts by developed nations to curb it. On average the amount is growing by about 2 ppm per year. That's 100 times faster than at the end of the Ice Age.

Back then, it took 7,000 years for carbon dioxide to reach 80 ppm, Tans said. Because of the burning of fossil fuels, such as oil and coal, carbon dioxide levels have gone up by that amount in just 55 years.

Before the Industrial Revolution, carbon dioxide levels were around 280 ppm, and they were closer to 200 during the Ice Age, which is when sea levels shrank and polar places went from green to icy. There are natural ups and downs of this greenhouse gas, which comes from volcanoes and decomposing plants and animals. But that's not what has driven current levels so high, Tans said. He said the amount should be even higher, but the world's oceans are absorbing quite a bit, keeping it out of the air.

"What we see today is 100 percent due to human activity," said Tans, a NOAA senior scientist. The burning of fossil fuels, such as coal for electricity and oil for gasoline, has caused the overwhelming bulk of the man-made increase in carbon in the air, scientists say.

The world sent 38.2 billion tons of carbon dioxide into the air in 2011, according international calculations published in a scientific journal in December. China spews 10 billion tons of carbon dioxide into the air per year, leading all countries, and its emissions are growing about 10 percent annually. The U.S. at No. 2 is slowly cutting emissions and is down to 5.9 billion tons per year.

The speed of the change is the big worry, said Pennsylvania State's Mann. If carbon dioxide levels go up 100 ppm over thousands or millions of years, plants and animals can adapt. But that can't be done at the speed it is now happening.

"We are a society that has inadvertently chosen the double-black diamond run without having learned to ski first," NASA climate scientist Gavin Schmidt said. "It will be a bumpy ride."

Are the Days of the IT Specialist Numbered? | EdTech Magazine

In information technology ?education, we are accustomed to talking about alignment, or the degree to which the ?components of an educational system

(?standards, curricula, instruction) work together to achieve institutional and instructional goals.

The new buzzword today is "convergence," which reflects the ?integration of existing technologies into new forms that seamlessly bring together different types of ?media and applications. We are seeing an explosion in convergence, with ?smartphones and tablets among the most ubiquitous examples.

This evolution should also change how higher education institutions teach ? and what they teach ? as a means of launching their students into successful careers. Profound changes are ?occurring in the delivery of education and in the preparation of new kinds of IT professionals who can meet the changing demands of business and industry.

Convergence in Learning

At Lansing Community College (LCC), we are developing immersive and simulated software applications that incorporate gaming design to improve teaching and learning.

We expect the approach will help students learn complex content in less time, with better retention, than they are able to achieve in a traditional ?lecture format.

The challenge to ?infrastructure is significant, with expectations of increased ?bandwidth (especially in multiplayer ?environments) and zero downtime, as well as ?alterations to on-campus learning spaces. Growing demand for IT workers who ?understand current convergence technologies and who demonstrate the ability to learn new skills quickly is dramatically changing the role of the traditional IT ?specialist, who typically focused on a ?specific computer network, database or system administration function.

A New Generation

Convergence technologies require individuals who understand the various elements of integrated infrastructures and devices, including virtualization, storage management, mobile device integration and cloud computing. Convergence technicians must know how the infrastructure is equipped, deployed, secured and managed. They are consulted on design and deployment, including integration of emerging technologies ? often an impractical role for conventionally trained IT specialists.

Interest from business and industry in our college's service area and LCC's development of new teaching technologies led us to create a new program in convergence technology ? the blending or integration of voice, video, image and data into a single but flexible global communications network ? geared toward the enterprise and residential markets. Students who complete the track will earn industry certifications from Cisco Systems and CompTIA.

This past fall, 62 students ?began taking courses on a path ?toward ?certificates in convergence ?technology. An associate's degree will be offered in the same subject, allowing students to become job-ready quickly. And we ?recently launched a residential networking specialist ?certificate program for those interested in helping homeowners with residential ?technology needs, which often include ?convergence.

In partnership with the ?National Convergence ?Technology Center at Collin ?College in Texas, and with help from a $4.4 million ?National Science ?Foundation grant, we will continue to develop convergence courses such as cloud computing and ?virtualization, with the goal of ?becoming a mentor to help other colleges in our ?region with the ?development of their own ?convergence programs.

Beaverton receives $400,000 from U.S. Environmental Protection ...

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded Beaverton two grants worth $200,000 each to assess properties that may be contaminated.

One grant is to assess hazardous material contamination and the other is for petroleum contamination, said Amy Koski, economic development project coordinator for the city. Contaminated commercial or industrial sites are known as brownfields.

The money will allow the city's Community and Economic Development Department to launch a brownfields redevelopment program to help property owners identify and clean up contamination.

Deschutes County also received $400,000 for brownfield assessment through this program.

While these grants would only pay for assessment, other money could be available from the state and the EPA for environmental cleanup in the future, said Alma Flores, Beaverton's economic development manager.

Rep. Tobias Read, D-Beaverton, recently toured brownfield sites in the city and supports House Bill 3030, which would provide more state money for brownfield cleanups. The bill is currently in the Joint Committee on Ways and Means.

"We want to have more project-ready sites," Flores said, noting that companies seeking land will move on to other sites if a potential property turns out to need lengthy environmental cleanup. Beaverton has a limited number of industrial sites and needs to make sure properties are ready for development, she said.

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality lists 58 Beaverton sites in its environmental cleanup database and another 911 sites in its database of leaking underground storage tanks. Many of these sites have already been assessed or cleaned up, but around 27 of these could benefit from assessment, Flores said.

Contaminated sites tend to be in lower-income neighborhoods, and removing environmental hazards could improve the quality of life in those communities, she said.

"It's best to be proactive with issues related to the land," Flores said.

The city has not determined which sites could receive grant funding or how long the assessment process could take. All the potential sites are privately owned, Flores said.

As part of its grant program, the city would hire a consultant or multiple consultants to handle the assessments, Koski said.

Flores and Koski will attend an EPA brownfields conference in Atlanta next week, where they hope to learn more about how to implement the grants, Flores said.

Grants are an increasingly important part of Beaverton's strategy for revitalizing its downtown and launching health and transportation projects.

Beaverton hosted a symposium in February with federal, state and local officials to discuss how grant programs and intergovernmental cooperation could help the city achieve its goals. Officials from the federal and regional EPA offices attended.

The city hired Sustainable Strategies DC in June to help the city apply for grants, at a cost of up to $116,000 through the end of this fiscal year. In addition to the EPA grants, Sustainable Strategies has helped the city secure $1.6 million from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and a technical assistance award from the EPA.

NEC launches VersaPro VX business laptop, VG Ultrabook in Japan

NEC launches VersaPro VX business laptop, VG Ultrabook in Japan

You probably won't ever see these latest NEC computers hit retailers on this side of the Pacific, but if you do your laptop shopping in Japan, it's time to listen up. NEC's just flooded the market with a bounty of fresh models, all likely destined for corporate IT departments, and maybe a few homes.

There are a few additions to the Mate series, including an MG all-in-one, along with ML, ME and MB slim towers. Then, on the portables front, there's some VB, VH, VD and VA notebooks, followed by two standouts: a VX laptop for 138,500 JPY ($1,400) and a VG Ultrabook priced at a whopping 261,000 JPY (about $2,650). That first model is available with Intel Core i3 or i5 processors, a WXGA 15.6-inch LCD and integrated graphics. The pricey Ultrabook, for its part, can be had with a Core i5 or i7 processor, four gigs of RAM, a 1,600 x 900-pixel 13.3-inch LCD, integrated graphics and either Windows 8 Pro or Windows 7 (huzzah!). There's plenty more to discover, of course, but we'll leave that up to you. NEC loyalists can get their fix (in Japanese) at the source link below.

How You Can Help Save Threatened Russian Tigers: Op-Ed

Linda Walker?is manager of the Global Forest & Trade Network - North America for the World Wildlife Fund?(WWF) in Washington, D.C. She contributed this article to LiveScience?s Expert Voices: Op-Ed & Insights.

Your dining-room table may be one of the reasons why Russian tiger forests are being pushed to the brink of destruction. And without realizing it, you may be stepping on tiger habitat each time you walk on your hardwood floor.

That's a hard fact to read. The idea that flooring or a piece of furniture you purchased could be endangering the survival of the endangered Amur tiger is as troubling as it is surprising.

It?s a story that begins thousands of miles away in the Russian Far East, where loggers are illegally chopping down the largest and most valuable oak, ash, elm and linden trees, and shipping them across the border to China. There, companies are turning this illegal timber into hardwood furniture and flooring, and shipping it to the United States and Europe, where it is purchased by consumers who are unaware that the wood in their furniture was stolen from tiger habitat.

A recent investigation by WWF-Russia looked at more than 10 years of on-the-ground observations and found the situation sobering: Russia?s forest sector has become deeply criminalized, with poor law enforcement, allowing illegal loggers to plunder valuable timber stocks with impunity.

When we looked at Russian customs data from recent years, we were astounded by what we found. In 2010 alone, the volume of Mongolian oak logged for export was twice the amount legally authorized for harvest from the region ? meaning that at least half of the oak shipped across the border to China that year was stolen. Even worse, in 2007 and 2008, the amount was four times as much as legally allowed.

We also looked at how timber thieves are prosecuted and found that very few are brought to trial. In 2011, for example, only 16 percent of the 691 registered cases of illegal logging in Russia?s Primorsky province were officially brought to court ? the lowest percentage in the past 10 years.

With the financial rewards from illegal logging high and the odds of being caught low, it's no surprise that illegal logging has reached epidemic proportions in the Russian Far East, and is devastating forest ecosystems and the livelihoods of forest-dependent communities.

Illegal logging degrades vital habitat for Amur tigers and their prey. Scientists estimate around 450 Amur tigers remain in the wild. Overharvesting limits the supply of pine nuts and acorns ? a main food source for Amur tigers? prey. And as timber supplies dwindle, ecologically sensitive forests, like wildlife reserves, are increasingly threatened. [Tiger Summit: What Will It Take to Save Iconic Cat?]

It?s more critical than ever to get these crimes under control. WWF has been working for more than a decade in the region, seeking solutions. We are tackling the problem from several angles in Russia: urging stronger law enforcement and transparency; engaging with companies committed to responsible forestry by promoting Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification; and encouraging international cooperation among governments committed to addressing the trade of illegal wood ? including the United States, with the Lacey Act.

But there's more to be done to reduce the demand for those illegal products here at home. As one of the largest importers of flooring and furniture from China, U.S. consumers and businesses can play a role in helping combat illegal logging and save this crucial tiger habitat. [Iconic Cats Album: All 9 Species of Tiger]

Businesses: As Russian plant species can be purposely mislabeled as originating from other countries, importers of Chinese or Russian hardwood furniture and flooring must confirm the species and country of wood origin. Companies can face a significant risk of liability under the U.S. Lacey Act for trading and purchasing illegally sourced wood products. For products made with Russian oak, ash, elm or linden, companies should exclusively purchase FSC-certified products to ensure they are sourcing products from legal and responsible sources. If FSC-certified products are not available, companies should establish rigorous legality and traceability confirmation systems. If neither approach is possible, buyers should avoid any products made from Russian Far East hardwoods due to the high risks of illegality.

Consumers: Knowing where your wood comes from is more important than ever, if we are to conserve this crucial habitat for the Amur tiger and its prey. How can you be sure you?re not contributing to the destruction of Amur tiger forests when you purchase wood flooring or furniture products? The easiest way is to purchase FSC-certified products. FSC certification provides the assurance that legal, environmental and social protections are in place and that forests have been managed responsibly.

So next time you sit down at your dining room table and have a bite to eat, or dance across your hardwood floor, remember that as a consumer, you can play an important role in protecting the most precious places on the planet. Your responsible purchasing decisions can make a difference.

Queen opens parliament, promises tougher immigration law

    By Andrew Osborn

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's coalition government put a crackdown on immigration at the heart of its legislative agenda on Wednesday in the hope of stopping an exodus of voters to a populist anti-immigration party before a national election in 2015.

In a pageantry-rich ceremony marking the annual opening of Britain's parliament, Queen Elizabeth said a new immigration bill would "ensure that this country attracts people who will contribute and deters those who will not".

Donning her crown, she was reading out the government's plans days after the UK Independence Party (UKIP) made sweeping gains in local elections at the government's expense, posing a threat to Prime Minister David Cameron's re-election chances.

His Conservatives are the senior member of a two-party coalition, but hope to win outright in 2015 and govern alone.

The programme for the year ahead contained other bills too but the government chose to highlight its swoop on immigration. Legislation to address big issues like the economy and Britain's relationship with the European Union was notably absent.

Questioning immigration was for years regarded as racist in Britain. But all three main parties have started to talk tough on the subject after opinion polls showed it was one of the issues that worried voters the most at a time when a weak economy means their own living standards are being squeezed.

UKIP and local newspapers have suggested Britain risks being inundated by "hordes" of Romanians and Bulgarians next year after EU restrictions on their freedom of movement expire.

Even the Liberal Democrats, Cameron's left-leaning junior coalition partner, support tougher measures.

    IMMIGRATION BILL IN DETAIL

The new bill will require landlords to check the immigration status of their tenants, levy big fines on businesses that use illegal labour, and limit newcomers' access to the National Health Service. It will also make it easier to deport people and harder for people to challenge attempts to remove them.

Most analysts believe that the rise of UKIP, which wants Britain to leave the EU and end "open door" immigration, has shifted the immigration debate to the right.

Peter Wilding, director of British Influence, a group campaigning for Britain to stay in the EU, said the issue had been exaggerated. "We've got to get real on European immigration," he told Reuters. "Fewer than one in 50 EU migrants have ever claimed benefits here."

Once derided as a party of "closet racists" by Cameron, UKIP won a quarter of the vote in local elections on May 2, siphoning ballots from the Conservatives, the Lib Dems and even the opposition Labour party.

Cameron said his government had cut immigration by one third since it took power in 2010.

Ed Miliband, the leader of Labour, some of whose voters have also defected to UKIP, suggested the government was doing too much to pander to the anti-immigration party.

"The government has a reality problem. This gracious speech was their chance to answer (UKIP)," Miliband told parliament.

"It should have contained ... action to get growth moving and to genuinely confront the cost of living crisis. But it fails on all those fronts."
