US Army tests robot that can jump 30 feet high

Developed by Boston Dynamics and Sandia National Labs, the Sand Flea reconnaissance robot can leap through a second-floor window.?

If you think that you might be safe from a robot uprising just because you live on the second floor, think again. A team of scientists have developed a reconnaissance robot that can jump 30 feet in the air and is precise enough to leap through a window two stories up. ?

Skip to next paragraph The 11-pound Sand Flea robot normally drives like a remote control car, but when it needs to, it can jump 30 feet into the air. An onboard stabilization system keeps it oriented during flight to improve the view from the video uplink and to control landings. Current development of Sand Flea is funded by the The US Army's Rapid Equipping Force.

Developed by Boston Dynamics, an engineering firm based in Waltham, Mass., with funding from?the Army's Rapid Equipping Force, the Sand Flea weighs 11 pounds and looks like a stripped-down RC car.?Before jumping, the Sand Flea stops, rears back, and then fires a piston that launches it into the air.

The piston is powered by a CO2 ?charge. The Sand Flea can jump 25 times before the charge needs to be replaced.

The Sand Flea is an updated version of the Precision Urban Hopper, which was developed by Sandia National Laboratories. The Sand Flea improves upon its predecessor with a gyroscopic?stabilization?system that keeps it oriented as it jumps, making for improved video in midflight.

The Sand Flea has been sent to?Army Test and Evaluation Command for?evaluation. CNET reports that, if it passes, the Army will ship nine of them to Afghanistan, where they will join the roughly 2,000 other robots currently deployed there.?

RED BUD, Ill. (AP) ? The Mega Millions winners ? at least three of them ? stayed out of sight. The losers, who could number 100 million, had plenty to say Saturday about losing out on the world's largest-ever lottery jackpot and their dashed dreams of colossal wealth.

Journalists descended on convenience stores in Illinois and Maryland and Kansas lottery officials proudly proclaimed they sold winning tickets in the $640 million world record-breaking Mega Millions jackpot. The winners will earn $213 million before taxes. Three other ticket holders became millionaires.

But on the street, online, and outside the stores where the winners had purchased their tickets, Americans grumbled about hopes that were raised, and then vanished. And they mused about what they would have done with the money.

"What do I do with this useless lottery ticket now?" Laurel Ashton Brooks of Greensboro, N.C., asked on Twitter.

As the jackpot got bigger by the hour on Thursday and Friday, Americans had snapped up tickets while dreaming of quitting jobs, paying off debts, building hospitals, buying an island. On Saturday, they took to Twitter and Facebook to bemoan their lost, razor-thin chance at millions.

"I knew that when I bought the ticket, that I wouldn't win. But I did it anyhow," said Sean Flaherty, a video game tester in New York City. "The whole notion of 'what if' still has some currency with me."

All told, Americans spent nearly $1.5 billion for a chance to hit the jackpot, which amounts to a $462 million lump sum and around $347 million after federal tax withholding. With the jackpot odds at 1 in 176 million, it would cost $176 million to buy up every combination. Under that scenario, the strategy would win $171 million less if your state also withholds taxes.

Illinois' winner used a quick pick ? an automatically generated set of digits ? to select the winning numbers at a convenience store in the small town of Red Bud, south of St. Louis, Illinois Lottery spokesman Mike Lang said. The winning numbers also sold at a 7-Eleven in Milford Mill, Md., north of Baltimore.

"It's just unbelievable. Everyone is wanting to know who it is," said Denise Metzger, manager of the Motomart where Illinois' winning ticket was sold. "All day yesterday I was selling tickets and I was hoping someone from Red Bud would win. Never in my wildest dreams did I think this. I'm just tickled pink."

Paramedic Dan Parrott walked away from the store with $5 in winnings after checking numbers on his $40 worth of tickets. That won't pay for the new house, new car and the new ambulances he'd decided the jackpot would help him buy in this farming community of 3,700 about 40 miles south of St. Louis.

"I'd love to have all that money, but with all of that money comes responsibility," he said outside the store. "But it'd still be awesome."

James Sitzes emerged from the MotoMart where his check of his six plays flopped. "I bought them at the right place," he shrugged. "I just didn't have the right numbers."

"I've been thinking for years what I'd do with all that money," said Sitzes, 70. He'd pay off the house, invest the rest and give away his small plating shop.

In Maryland, TV cameras descended upon the 7-Eleven where the state's winning ticket was purchased. The harried manager repeatedly said "No interviews" to reporters pressing for details as customers pushed through the media crush for their morning.

Nyeri Murphy, holding two scratch-off tickets, said she normally plays Powerball but drove to a nearby county to buy $70 worth of Mega Millions tickets this week. "I should have bought them here," she said.

Maryland does not require lottery winners to be identified; the Mega Millions winner can claim the prize anonymously. The store will receive a $100,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket, which was purchased Friday night.

The third winning ticket was purchased in northeast Kansas, but no other information would be released by the Kansas Lottery until the winner comes forward, spokeswoman Cara S. Sloan-Ramos said.

No winner had contacted the agency by Saturday morning, Kansas Lottery Director Dennis Wilson said. "We sure want to meet the winner, but we want to tell them, sign the back of the ticket and secure it."

Kansas law also allows lottery winners to remain anonymous, though lottery winners in Illinois are identified.

The winning numbers in Friday night's drawing were 02-04-23-38-46, and the Mega Ball 23.

Maryland Lottery spokeswoman Carole Everett said the last time a ticket from the state won a major national jackpot was in 2008, when a ticket won for $24 million.

"We're thrilled," she said. "We're due and excited."

The holder of the winning ticket in Maryland has 182 days to come forward and claim the prize. Winners in Kansas and Illinois have up to one year; but if the Illinois winner wants to be paid in a lump sum, they have to come forward in 60 days, said Lang.

Even though just three tickets matched all the winning numbers, the jackpot made a millionaire of at least three other winners and gave a windfall to more than 100 others. Three ticket-holders won $1 million each, and 158 won $250,000 for matching the first five numbers drawn, said Chuck Strutt, executive director of the Multi-State Lottery Association in Urbandale, Iowa.

The estimated jackpot dwarfs the previous $390 million record, which was split in 2007 by two winners who bought tickets in Georgia and New Jersey.

For some, the dreams were enough. Katie Kapczynski bought her first-ever lottery ticket with a roommate at a Washington, D.C., gas station. The attendant had to show her how to buy one.

"We kind of went more for the experience than the 'what if','" she said.

On Saturday morning, Kapczynski, a visitor services manager at the Newseum who was in New York on vacation, had left her $6 in tickets behind at home.

She still doesn't know if she won.

Pinterest still the latest craze

With all of the social media sites these days connecting people via Internet, the ideas website creators have are endless. One website in particular that may spark your interest is called Pinterest. Pinterest is a relatively new social media website that allows users to browse through multiple pictures, or ?pins,? varying in content from?32 different categories that it offers. Categories include Do-it-yourself, Fitness, Food & Drink, Photography, Wedding & Events and many others to fulfill any interest group.

The way that Pinterest works is a simple process. People that would like to activate an account request an invite using their e-mail address. The reason a request is necessary is due to the overload of users on the website now, due to popularity. After an invitation is sent, users can choose to connect their account to their Facebook or Twitter account to make an easier and more efficient way to follow their friends and their pins. With Pinterest, you are able to create pinboards in which you can pin pictures you find through your followed friends, or the public category browsing option. You also may add your own photos and links to personal blogs for more information on your interests so others can re-pin your photos. External links are often used when you click on a pin. This redirects the user to another website; a recipe for the dessert you pinned, a website to purchase a product, etc. Once boards are created, users can add as many pictures or pins as they want to so that ideas and pictures can mesh together forming one broad area of interest. When users re-pin a picture, you have to ability to edit the description of a pin so that the web can view your own interpretation of an idea.

Pinterest was founded by Ben Sibermann from West Des Moines, Iowa. It was launched in March 2010. After just nine months, there were over 10,000 users. Pinterest is now based in Palo Alto, California.

Many Pinners? favorite category is the Food & Drink section. This has recipes to creative desserts, appetizers, meals and many more tasty ideas. Seniors Tara Franz and Ashley Falkner whipped up two desserts together.

?We made peanut butter brownies and flourless chocolate cookies,? Franz said.

Along with categories just for fun, useful ideas for organization are also featured. School Librarian Mrs. Thompson uses Pinterest actively for fun, as well for a resource for education. Thompson made multiple signs that benefit the library and teaching visuals.

?We also looked at something that showed different ways to tie a scarf,? Thompson said.

Soon-to-be bride Miss Robinson has looked at the Wedding category to look at inspiration for things like flower arrangements and styles.

Pinterest is not just limited to girls; many things are available for guys too! Although many have become familiar with the website, but not everyone is involved. Make sure to check it out in the future! For now, here is an example of one of the most popular desserts that have got everyone?s mouths watering.

Pinterest's "Cookie-Oreo-Brownie" dessert is a big hit. Start out with 1 box of normal brownie mix, 1 box of oreos, and 2 rolls of cookie dough.

?

Press the cookie dough evenly throughout the whole pan.

?

After dough is spread out, put a single layer of oreos evenly over the dough.

?

Make sure the oreos cover the majority of the dough.

When oreos are placed on the dough, prepare the brownie mix as stated on the box. Pour the brownie batter on top of the oreos and spread evenly.

?

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the outsides look done.

?

Enjoy!

Migrant domestic violence support scheme extended ~ Daily World ...

A scheme to help migrants forced to leave relationships as a result of domestic violence is being made permanent, the Home Office has said.

The move follows a pilot project that has provided support for 1,522 people, including 738 women with children.

The initiative assists victims who would otherwise be destitute or have no access to public funds.

Immigration Minister Damian Green said domestic violence affected people of all ages and backgrounds.

'Terrible crime'

The scheme helps spouses and partners, who are foreign nationals and the victims of domestic violence, with access to support services.

The government said the project would assist an estimated 500 people a year in the UK.

Immigration Minister Damian Green said: "Domestic violence is a terrible crime affecting people of all ages and backgrounds and this government is determined to tackle it.

"No one should be forced to stay in an abusive relationship and this scheme helps victims in genuine need escape violence and harm and seek the support they deserve."

The scheme will become permanent in April following a pilot called the Sojourner Project which has been running since 2009.

The government said that in many cases victims were afraid to seek help because they lacked financial support and feared they would be removed from the UK if their relationship failed.

'Saved lives'

Those eligible for the scheme will be granted a limited period of exceptional leave to remain by the UK Border Agency.

Victims would be able to access financial and support services, such as a refuge, and be allowed to apply for UK residency.

Jo Clarke, from refuge charity Eaves Women's Aid, who co-ordinated the pilot, said: "The Sojourner Project pilot has been a huge success, enabling in excess of 1,000 people, 12 of them men, to escape abusive relationships and secure indefinite leave to remain in the UK.

"Victims of domestic violence with no recourse to public funds are among the most vulnerable and badly abused so the Sojourner funding has, quite literally, saved many lives.

"Our findings have demonstrated the need for this escape route and I welcome the introduction of the government's long-term solution which will mainstream the provision of financial support to this group."

Insight: In secret unit, clues to top Israeli duo's chemistry

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Forty years before becoming Israel's top decision-making duo, Benjamin Netanyahu and Ehud Barak first made news on the blood-stained wing of a hijacked Belgian airliner.

Disguised as tousle-haired mechanics, with slim pistols concealed beneath their white overalls, Israel's future prime minister and defense chief had stormed the Sabena jet at Lod airport near Tel Aviv as part of Sayeret Matkal, the secret special forces regiment which Barak, then aged 30, led.

Netanyahu, eight years younger, was largely untested in counter-terrorism operations. "It was the first time I had ever held a handgun," he would later remember.

The dozen or so clambering commandos killed two Palestinian Black September gunmen and overpowered two grenade-wielding women with them. One of the 100 hostages died but the raid was hailed a master-stroke, the only casualty among Barak's men being Netanyahu, shot in the arm by a comrade - "He took it just fine," the unit's then deputy chief, Danny Yatom, recalls drily.

That mission in May 1972, one of the few by Sayeret Matkal on which details have been made public, crystallizes for many Israelis the view that Netanyahu and Barak still today operate as a covert team, crafting strategy with a maverick intimacy born behind enemy lines and a clubby elitism that eclipses their markedly divergent personalities and politics.

The inner dynamics of the relationship resonate widely, as friends and foes weigh up whether they might order an attack on Iran's nuclear sites. But this powerful odd couple, the old leftist and the right-winger, the ex-commander and his more popular former subordinate, the cool tactician and impulsive visionary, is an enigma, even for those who know them well.

Giving little away, Barak himself told a radio interviewer last week: "There is no difference between us on how we see things ... There are always differences on this detail or that, but all in all we see things eye to eye."

That is quite a statement for a man who, when Labor party leader in 1999, usurped Netanyahu as prime minister after an election where Barak campaigned to halt his liberal assault on Israel's socialist economic model and seek a deal with Palestinians that was anathema to Netanyahu's right-wing Likud.

And the portrayal of harmony, now that the shifting ground of Israeli politics has since 2009 brought them together in coalition, belies discernable public differences on Iran, albeit differences of emphasis rather than substance on whether Tehran, for all its denials, is seeking a nuclear weapons capability.

Netanyahu, a conservative ideologue fond of quoting Winston Churchill, casts an Iranian bomb as a second Holocaust in-the-making which must be prevented at all costs. Barak, a famously unflappable and cold-eyed political pragmatist, prefers to portray reining in Tehran as an international challenge and to remind his compatriots of Israel's regional military supremacy.

"RESPONSIBLE ADULT"

Whether the balance of their views augurs a "pre-emptive" attack on Iran, or conversely, a hand-on-hilt resignation to its atomic ambitions, is, constitutionally, for Netanyahu to decide. But his reliance on his former Sayeret Matkal commander has some wondering who really calls the shots on such fateful questions.

"Barak's status is nothing less than partnership in the prime ministership -- 'Prime Minister II'," wrote Boaz Haetzni for the right-wing news service Arutz-7, whose contributors are often critical of Netanyahu's support for his defense minister.

Amir Oren of the liberal Haaretz newspaper argues much of Barak's support in the wider electorate derives from a belief among voters that he "would function as the 'responsible adult' on the Iranian issue and restrain Netanyahu" from rash decisions liable to plunge the region into unbridled conflict and fray Israel's alliance with its vital ally in Washington.

Yet the idea that Netanyahu is subordinate to Barak, or even on an equal footing, is ridiculed by confidants of both men -- including several who served with them in Sayeret Matkal, the Israeli version of Britain's SAS or the American Delta Force.

Yatom, who was also on the Sabena airliner and later headed the Mossad spy service, acknowledged the lasting bonds forged in combat: "You will always remember your commander as your commander, even if you overtake him later in life," he said.

But while he did not doubt Netanyahu's continued esteem for Barak, Yatom told Reuters the latter was fully aware that it was his former trooper who "was the one elected prime minister by the Israeli people, and has responsibility for everything, both successes and failures".

Other loyal comrades also dismissed the idea that army memories could distort the political hierarchy that puts the prime minister - popularly known as Bibi - firmly on top.

Dani Arditi, another Sayeret Matkal contemporary of the pair, said speculation about imbalance in the Netanyahu-Barak chemistry came from "people with an agenda, who are trying to cast aspersions about the way they function as leaders".

"Barak has a big effect on Bibi, because he is a serious and accomplished person," said Arditi, a former Israeli national security adviser. "But in the end, it is the prime minister who will make the difficult decisions."

FORMATIVE YEARS

Sayeret Matkal was profoundly formative for both men.

Short and boyishly thin, the young Barak seemed an unusual choice for an outfit specializing in unsupported desert forays and long-range lightning raids, the mainstay of the unit before counter-terrorism duties beckoned. But his motley skills, from navigation to lock-picking, an analytical mind and his drive to prove himself distinguished Barak, who eventually became armed forces chief and Israel's most decorated soldier.

"The skinny youth who was insecure about his physical abilities turned into a brilliant and leading officer," wrote Moshe Zonder in "Sayeret Matkal", a history of the regiment, whose name translates as General Staff Reconnaissance Unit.

For Netanyahu, the military was a family affair, making his ascent into its combat elites less out of the ordinary. His dashing elder brother Yoni commanded Sayeret Matkal and was killed leading the 1976 rescue of Israeli hostages at Entebbe, Uganda, taking his place in the pantheon of national heroes.

Netanyahu's younger brother, Ido, also served in the unit.

Conscripted into Israel's most select and trusted strike force, all three sons were also discharging an obligation to their father, Benzion Netanyahu, a scholar of anti-Semitism to whose hawkish views the prime minister sometimes openly defers.

An upbringing by a historian who gave his sons a sweeping vision of Jewish history and their place in it is seen by those who know him well as vital to understanding how Netanyahu sees the potential threat to Israel of a hostile, nuclear Iran.

POLITICAL HIERARCHY

Other veterans of Sayeret Matkal recall contrasting styles of leadership from the two men that has been reflected in their political fortunes: the American-educated Netanyahu was more easy going and likeable; Barak, raised on a poor collective farm, zealous to the point of callousness about his men.

For all the controversy his hawkish policies provoke in Europe and the Middle East, Netanyahu's political standing at home is strong, with approval ratings hovering around 50 percent. Barak has seen his popularity plummet since last year, when he quit Labor amid deepening policy drift and infighting.

At the helm of his new Independence party he may not muster enough votes in the next election to stay in politics. While a business career between spells in politics left him wealthy, Barak now needs Netanyahu if he wants a future with influence.

As a senior adviser to Netanyahu, Ron Dermer, put it: "Netanyahu is unchallenged politically. The differential in terms of political power is so great that it does not factor in. There is a very clear hierarchy. It is very clear who's on top."

But he also played down the importance of the two men's political duels a decade and more ago: "The past adversity between them is, I would say, the aberration," he said.

"What they have underneath, their shared history in the army, is the bedrock. There is a basic level of mutual respect."

Supporting that view of a relationship that runs deeper than politics, Zonder, the historian, recalled a Sayeret Matkal reunion in 1997. Netanyahu was prime minister, Barak leader of the opposition. The premier arrived last: "Netanyahu hesitates about where to sit and then finally grabs the free place next to Barak," Zonder wrote. "Barak leans his elbow on Netanyahu's knee, a proximity that is a little surprising in its intimacy."

Dermer dismissed as "psychobabble and ridiculous" the idea that Barak reins in Netanyahu on tinderbox issues like Iran.

But he acknowledged the defense minister does enjoy remarkable autonomy, flying to Washington almost every other month for talks with the Obama administration, whose ties with Netanyahu are testy and which wants more time to see whether international sanctions on Tehran can halt its nuclear work.

The two form a complementary team in handling their key ally. Barak taps reserves of U.S. goodwill from his two years as Labor premier when another Democrat, Bill Clinton, was in the White House. Netanyahu, for his part, enjoys voluble support in an Israel-friendly Congress and might feel more comfortable should a Republican unseat Obama at November's election.

Wondering if a strategic symbiosis was at work between the two Israelis, as they and their American counterparts balance diplomacy and military threats to try and bend Iran's will, veteran Israeli columnist Nahum Barnea asked: "Is a division of Labor being created between them, with Netanyahu pushing for action at any price while Barak is keeping his options open? Is Netanyahu with the Republicans and Barak with the Democrats?"

HIGH-YIELD, HIGH-RISK

Influencing Washington is a vital part of Israeli diplomacy on Iran. Neither Netanyahu nor Barak makes a secret of preferring that the United States, with its superior arms and global clout, lead any operation against Iran - Israel's ability on its own to cause lasting damage to atomic plants is limited.

But few would rule out the possibility of Israel going it alone if it thought that was in its interests - and for clues to how its leaders would take such a calculated gamble, many are tempted to look again at their common history in Sayeret Matkal.

The unit's record of pulling off high-risk, high-yield feats in defiance of convention and caution, might persuade Netanyahu and Barak that taking on Iran is not beyond Israel's reach.

Then again, the commandos' doctrine prefers sneak assaults in small numbers, not the mass bombing raids that would be required to set back decisively Iran's nuclear ambitions.

For some, the drumbeat of Israeli preparation for war has been an indication it may become inevitable. Yet veterans of the secret strike unit that molded the two leaders have many memories of preparing audacious operations that never got a green light from the government and were quietly shelved.

But, as quoted in Zonder's history of the unit, Netanyahu himself, speaking at the 1997 Sayeret Matkal reunion, reflected on lessons it had taught him about seeing through long-term goals: "There are missions that are scheduled, months or even a year or two in advance," Netanyahu said.

"There is a certain objective that you home in on, harnessing all of your emotional and other resources to achieving it ... And if it's not achieved, you try again."

Yet those who fear Netanyahu's nightmare vision of a nuclear Iran could lead him into starting a war whose outcome would be far from clear might also note the tone of wry, self-awareness in his recollection of the Sabena hostage rescue. It could have gone badly wrong and a string of mishaps during the operation included Netanyahu himself being shot by his own side:

"I have to tell you that all I remember is one thing," he said. "Getting up onto the plane was easier than getting off."

Tax incentives are not the same when it comes to reducing cost to consumers and investors

The State of Illinois is facing an important renewable energy deadline in 2025, and Northwestern University's Harold H. Kung has a piece of advice for Springfield to consider now: Investment Tax Credit.

Illinois is obligated to begin increasing its production of electricity from renewable sources, and a significant chunk of that will be wind power. Wind farms are expensive to build, resulting in higher energy costs for consumers and some risk to investors (who are needed to stimulate wind farm development). Fortunately, a number of government tax incentives can help reduce that burden.

Kung, an energy and sustainability expert, analyzed the impact of two incentives -- Investment Tax Credit and Production Tax Credit -- in six new wind farm scenarios. He found Investment Tax Credit to be more attractive for consumers and investors alike. It provides a lower cost to consumers for electricity produced from wind and a faster return on investment for investors.

"Because of the high capital cost of wind power, electricity generated from wind is more costly than from existing conventional sources," Kung said. "Government incentives can help mitigate the additional costs. It is useful to have estimates of the potential financial effects of various policies, particularly from the consumer's point of view."

Kung is a professor of chemical and biological engineering at the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science and a Dorothy Ann and Clarence L. Ver Steeg Distinguished Research Fellow.

His analysis, titled "Impact of Deployment of Renewable Portfolio Standard on the Electricity Price in the State of Illinois and Implications on Policies," is published in the journal Energy Policy.

Illinois has enacted Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) to reduce the carbon footprint of electricity consumption. By 2025, 25 percent of the electricity consumed in the state must be from renewable sources, such as wind, solar and hydroelectric power. Of the renewable energy portion to be phased in through that date, three-quarters is to come from wind power.

Investment Tax Credit (ITC) and Production Tax Credit (PTC) both have a direct monetary effect on the wind electricity price, Kung said. In the short term, ITC is more favorable to investors (it brings about a faster return on investment) and to consumers (due to lower electricity price). But, he added, the benefit of ITC disappears when the capital cost is fully depreciated whereas the PTC could continue for as long as the policy permits.

Other incentives that could lower the capital cost of installation of wind power include policies that encourage and result in technology improvement, land rezoning and installation and upgrade of transmission lines.

Kung's analysis focused on new wind power to be installed within the RPS period beginning in 2011 and ending in 2024 with energy production beginning in the following year (from 2012 to 2025). He used three sets of historic data -- retail electricity sale, electricity generation and capacity -- as bases to construct different electricity production growth and incentive scenarios up until 2025. Kung derived policy implications from his results.

###

In addition to Illinois, 23 other states and the District of Columbia have enacted Renewable Portfolio Standards. More information can be found at http://bit.ly/P6fQy.

Samsung SCX-3405FW

If you need a mono laser MFP for light-duty printing in a micro office or as a personal printer in any size office, the Samsung SCX-3405FW ($200 street) should grab your attention. Small enough to share a desk with, it offers wired and WiFi network support; the ability to scan, work as a standalone copier and fax machine; and the ability to fax from your PC even over a network. It even includes a 40-page automatic document feeder (ADF) to complement the letter-size flatbed and let you scan legal-size pages. Add in the reasonably high-quality output and acceptable, if not impressive, speed, and it's certainly worth a look.

The SCX-3405FW is one of the few mono laser MFPs that's small enough to serve comfortably as a personal printer. In fact, it's one of the smallest. Measuring 11.7 by 15.8 by 11.5 inches (HWD), it's smaller than the Editors' Choice Panasonic KX-MB2000 ($130 street, 4 stars) for example, and roughly the same size as the HP LaserJet Pro M1217nfw MFP ($259.99 direct, 3.5 stars) that I recently reviewed.

The practical cost of the printer?s very small size is that it has little room for paper handling features. If you plan to share it on a network, the 150-sheet tray?with no manual feed and no automatic duplexing?will limit it to light-duty printing even by micro office standards. However, the paper handling is adequate for most personal use where the small size is more important, since you'll likely want to keep it on, or next to, your desk.

Setup and Speed
Setting up the SCX-3405FW was standard fare. For my tests, I connected it to a network using the Ethernet port and ran the tests from a Windows Vista system.

Samsung SCX-3405FW

Samsung rates the printer at 21 pages per minute (ppm), which means you should see close to that speed when you print text files with no graphics or photos. On our business applications suite, I timed it (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing) at an effective 7.7 ppm, fast enough so the speed shouldn't be an issue, but far from impressive. It's essentially tied with the less expensive KX-MB2000, at 8 ppm and significantly slower than the more expensive M1217nfw, at 11.1 ppm.

Output Quality and Other issues
Output quality for the SCX-3405FW is a bit of a mixed bag, but its strongest scores are for text and graphics, which are generally the more important types of output for mono printers. Both are at the top of the tight range where the vast majority of mono laser MFPs fall. Photo quality is at rock bottom of the full range for the category.

The text is easily good enough for any typical business document, even if you need small font sizes, although you may have to pick the font style carefully if you need 4 or 5 point size. Depending on your level of perfectionism, you might even consider it good enough for desktop publishing. Graphics quality is similarly good enough for any internal business need, including PowerPoint handouts and the like.

Photo quality is good enough to print, say, Web pages with recognizable photos, which makes it good enough for internal business use. However, there's an obvious loss of shading across the entire range from white to black, so light areas, like a sky with clouds, turned solid white in my tests, and dark areas turned a solid black. I wouldn't even consider using the printer for something like a client newsletter with photos.

As long as you don't need better-quality photos?and odds are you don't if you're shopping for a mono laser MFP?the Samsung SCX-3405FW has a lot to recommend it. It offers all the MFP features you're likely to need in a personal printer?scanning, faxing, and copying. And note that Samsung offers free apps that that let the printer both print from and scan to Android, iOS, and Windows 7 devices over a Wi-Fi access point, with plans to allow direct Wi-Fi connection with a firmware upgrade later this year. Most of all, it's small enough to be a good physical fit as a personal printer, as well as a good fit for what it can do.

Kinect for Windows version 1.5 to be released in May

Image
Seems like it was only yesterday that Microsoft took the wraps off version 1.0 of Kinect for Windows, putting the power of voice and gesture controls in the hands of the hoi polloi. Now, the gang in Redmond has said that version 1.5 will be coming in May, and will bring 10-joint skeletal tracking to let the sensor bar work while users are seated. The update also includes Kinect Studio, an app that allows devs to record, play and debug clips of users to fine tune their applications. Additionally, it brings language support for French, Spanish, Italian and Japanese, plus there's added support for regional dialects in those languages and English as well. Lastly, Microsoft is promising a whole slew of new countries around the globe will be getting Kinect for Windows in May and June, so to see if your homeland made the cut, check out the source below.

Helping veterans transition to civilian jobs

Helping veterans get jobs in civilian life was the topic of discussion today for political and community leaders in our region.

Congressman Phil Roe says a big focus of the event is helping to find a way for veterans to convert their military training to jobs in the civilian world.

?They have practical experience, ? he says, ?many of them years of it. Just transfer that to a piece of paper, so they can take an exam and say I?m certified as a Nurse Technician, an O.R. Tech, or whatever they may be"

Federal agencies and higher education representatives also spoke to veterans about opportunities in housing, small business loans, federal contracting and educational services.

Woods shares the lead going into Bay Hill weekend

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) ? He looked like the Tiger Woods of old, making his way around Bay Hill with such ease that he putted for birdie on every hole and never came seriously close to anything worse than par.

And after a 7-under 65 for a share of the lead, he sounded like the Woods of old.

Even when he was winning with regularity, Woods never looked beyond the next round to the trophy presentation. But he could sense the feeling of inevitability from those seated in front of him Friday afternoon, so Woods on more than one occasion mentioned what was left.

"I want to win ? yes, absolutely," Woods said. "We've got a long way to go. It's not like it's over right now. We've got 36 holes to go."

Woods ran off four straight birdies on the front nine, then put his name atop the leaderboard with a two-putt birdie on the 16th, followed by a 6-iron to 15 feet for birdie on the 17th.

Not long after Woods signed his card, Charlie Wi made four birdies on his last six holes for a 68 and joined him in the lead at 10-under 134. Wi has known Woods since their junior golf days in southern California ? Wi is four years old and went to the same high school as Jerry Chang, who is Woods' best friend.

Wi doesn't recall ever being paired with Woods on the PGA Tour, although he recalls beating him once when Wi was 13.

"He was 9," Wi said. "I was outdriving him then."

Former U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell had a tournament-best 63, which featured an eagle-par-birdie finish, and was one shot behind along with Jason Dufner, who had a 69.

So much of the focus is on Woods, and that much hasn't changed.

His recent record alone ? and not his six wins at Bay Hill ? would be reason to believe that this tournament is not quite over.

It's the first time in 30 months that Woods has been atop the leaderboard at a PGA Tour event, going back to the 2009 Tour Championship, won by Phil Mickelson. More recently, Woods had the 36-hole lead at the Australian Open, only to struggle in the third round and rally on the last day to finish third.

He did win the Chevron World Challenge in December, which was meaningful to Woods, especially that birdie-birdie finish at Sherwood. Then again, it was only an 18-man field of players from the top 50 in the world.

"So it really has not been as long as people might think it has been," Woods said. "I'm comfortable up there, and I feel like I'm playing well. We've still got a long way to go. We still have 36 holes to go. Still need to continue doing what I'm doing out there, just kind of plodding my way along."

Woods at least is in better shape than he was two weeks ago. His future looked as muddled as ever when Woods was taken off the golf course in a cart at Doral because of soreness and swelling in his left Achilles tendon, the same injury that forced him to miss three months and two majors a year ago.

One week later, he was practicing at Augusta National. Now, he's the player everyone is chasing on the weekend.

"I saw him on television at Doral and didn't look good there," said Ernie Els, who played with Woods at Bay Hill, and played with him when Woods shot 62 on the last day of the Honda Classic. "Today he was on, and today was the same as I saw at the Honda ? very on."

Woods only had a couple of nervous moments.

He ran off four straight birdies on the front nine to quickly get into the mix, and then couldn't decide how to play his tee shot on the 10th. It didn't help that earlier in the round, he looked over at adjacent first tee and saw Nick Watney ? affectionately known as "Rube" ? pipe his tee shot out-of-bounds to the right.

"I got over there and for some reason I'm thinking, 'You know, I probably really shouldn't hit this driver; I'll take something off of it, and just hit a little softy out there.' And bailed on it, because I didn't want to hit it right out-of-bounds," Woods said. "And I chalked that up to just not listening to my instincts of hitting a 3-iron down there or just chipping a 5-wood ? or not watching Ruby hit that shot."

Woods was lucky. The snap hook bounced off a net fence protecting the houses, and he had just enough room to play to the middle of the 10th green and walk away with par.

He also was disgusted with his approach to the par-5 16th, turning in anger and swiping at the ground. It wasn't a great shot, but it was dry, catching the left side of the green 50 feet away and setting up a two-putt birdie.

Woods also had a two-putt birdie at the par-5 sixth. He made birdies on the other par 5s with his wedge game. Over two rounds, he has had such improved control of his play that he hit 19 consecutive greens in regulation at one point. That streak ended on the 13th hole Friday, when he two-putted for par from on the fringe.

Some of that is familiarity.

"I've had a few places where I've felt comfortable and I've played well, and this is one of them," Woods said. "For some reason, I just understand how to play it."

And some of that is becoming more confident with his swing, especially how far he is hitting the ball. Woods said he was not hitting his irons as well before going to work with Sean Foley, and a straighter, tighter ball flight has led to more distance ? and more adjustments.

He felt as though he hit the ball better on Thursday in a round of 69, although he didn't have nearly as many birdie chances.

"My bad days are not as bad as they used to be," Woods said.

Woods had eight birdie putts inside 15 feet on Friday, compared with only five putts of that length on Thursday. He holed five putts longer than 6 feet on Friday, compared with only two on Thursday.

The best round came from McDowell, and it was a reminder of how far he has come in one year. McDowell had a dream season in 2010 by winning the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, winning the decisive point for Europe in the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor, then ending the year with a record comeback against Woods in the Chevron World Challenge.

McDowell had a hard time managing his time, much less his expectations, and the eye-opener was at Bay Hill last year when he shot 80.

This time, McDowell was 17 shots better.

"That 80 was a wake-up call, but I didn't wake up for another four months or so," McDowell said. "It was more of the panic button. It was a pretty awful four or five months for me.

"But like I say, I feel like you learn more from those types of experiences than you do from shooting 63 at Bay Hill. There's not much to learn out there except that if you play great and hole some putts, you can go low."

That's just what he did. And that's what someone will have to do on the weekend to win ? including Woods.
